Hi Despite the increase in texting, email, Facebook and Twitter, we still hang on to our fax machines. They are perfect for sending copies of original documents despite document jams, buying ink or special paper, maintaining a phone line--we love 'em. Basic problems like paper misfeeds can be troubleshooted through the use of some basic steps.
Check the Message
Check the messages on the display of your Brother fax machine. The messages will be pretty self-explanatory such as "Insert Doc, Again" or "Please Supply Paper." "Insert Doc. Again" means that that the documents weren't placed on the feeder correctly; just follow the instructions and try again. A message like "Please Supply Paper" will simply mean you need to replenish the paper. "Memory Overflow" is probably the most cryptic. It just means that the memory capacity was exceeded and it has stopped recording. Press "Enter" to register the documents in memory and to complete the operation.
Misfeeds
Clearing an original's misfeed by pushing down on the release lever to open the front panel. Remove the failed original and close the panel. To clear recording paper that's gotten jammed in the paperfeed, open the turn guide and remove the paper. To clear paper from the transport unit, which is in the top, open the cover, remove the drum and toner. Lift the guide and remove the paper by pulling upwards. Paper can get stuck in what is called the Fixing Unit. Open the top cover. Again, remove the drum and toner. Open the Fixing Unit cover and remove the paper by pulling it back.
(For Laser Printers Only) Toner sediment in the fuser unit. This specially occurs if you constantly use smaller paper sizes than the paper tray size. To resolve this you should disassemble the printer, take out the fuser unit and clean the toner sediment. The sediment can get rock solid so clean it carefully. If you are not accustomed with electronic components better visit a technician.
The paper sensors pulling spring may be detached. In this case the sensor gets a message that some paper exists in the fuser unit so a paper jam message is triggered. Fix the spring and you are done.
Step1 If you're setting up the printer or changing the toner or ink cartridge for the first time, double-check the instructions to make sure that you installed the cartridge correctly and, for new printers, that you have removed all the pieces of cardboard or plastic packing material. Step 2 Check to see whether paper is feeding from the paper tray. If it's not leaving the tray at all, try feeding a page manually (if that's an option) or using a different paper tray. Sometimes a problem with the tray can be traced to a broken spring or a piece of plastic. Step 3 If paper is feeding from the tray but jamming in the printer, examine where the jam is occurring and then inspect the printer carefully to see if you can find what is causing the problem. A piece of paper, for instance, might be blocking the paper path. Step 4 If paper is feeding through the printer but coming out blank, check to see whether the printer is out of toner or ink. A defective toner or ink cartridge could be the problem.
Pull out power cable and, disconnect priter from power outlet, put cable back in. If you still have led on after this, open all doors and check again fo intrusion. Pull out paper tray and check that there isnt a paper sheet stuck underneat the printer. Open front door, pull out toner and chech under toner, put toner back , restart and try. Open back door and check if there is a second paper sheet stuck inside
I had this problem too. For me the answer turned out to be the paper sensor in the back part of the machine, behind the little back door just under the top part of the machine. This sensor hangs down from a thin rod that runs across the width of the machine, and is held in place by a small spring that encircles the same rod that supports the finger. The finger had apparently gotten moved so the spring was dislodged from its proper place. I was able to rotate it around the rod with my finger & get the spring moved back to where it should be. This seems to have cleared the problem--I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
