Question about Verbatim 500GB USB Desktop 500 GB Hard Drive

Usb devise not recognised

I have a Verbatim 500GB USB external hard drive that was working fine until I inadvertedly pulled out the USB connector without first turning the drive power off. Now I get a message box in windows saying 'USB devise not recognised' Can anyone help fix the problem.

You probably damaged the drive from sudden disconnection of the signal line. I would suggest trying it on one other computer before considering it trashed.

I got this Vertatim model 53029 500GB. My problem is, that the USB-port on the extern hard disk went inside the hard disk, when I accidentally dropped it on the floor... Is there anyone who can help me??!...

I ran across THIS VIDEO that shows an easier way, but it is a different brand. It's worth checking to see if your Verbatim is set up the same way, usually these manufacturers all build the same way.
The second video (link posted above) shows a guy using a credit card to remove the cover, so it's simple. Just remove the cover and you can better see the situation.
Evidently Verbatim uses retail hard drives in their own plastic case. These drives have a small USB converter circuit board that plugs into the rear of the SATA hard drive and that is what you attach the USB cable to. It may be that only the mounting studs popped out and shoved the USB connector back in to the housing and it will still work. Once you get it open, connect it to the cable and try to make it work and you can get your data off of it. Another option is that these universal connectors are available. Try Newegg.com, or definitely try Ebay, there are lots of suppliers for that kind of equipment, I use several suppliers on Ebay all the time for repairs.
Hopefully the read/write heads were not physically damaged when it fell, but you won't know that until you try to start it up. If you hear a rattling, clicking noise when it tries to boot, I am afraid there are no other options.

I have two Verbatim Insight 500Gb external drives. I mistakenly unplugged them from my PC without pressing the option to remove hardware safely. It now only says scanning. No computer in my house will...


you may have to take them apart and put them directly in the computer to fix them and may have to reformat or fdisk them and format to use again but you will lose all the files. there are recovery programs out there but they are not free... there are recovery services out the that are very expensive (1200.00) good luck

Connected my Verbatim usb 500 external hard drive. It is recognized under Computer Management > Disk Management....but not in My Computer. When I click on its properties it says device is working...


Under DISK MANAGEMENT, you should see the 500GB drive.
Does it show as "formatted" (FAT32? NTFS?) or as "unformatted" ?
If "unformatted", then right-mouse-click on the drive, and 'format' it, and assign it a drive-letter.

Plug it in one of the usb ports of your computer. Check if the external hard drive has a power button.
Normally, something will pop up on the screen asking you to install the software that came with it.

Follow the instructions and you may now use the external drive as your back up drive.

My 500g verbatim hard drive keeps cutting off please help


It could be a problem with USB cable, so if you have a spare one you could try with it.
Additionaly, if you are using windows operating system, you might have turned on power saving scheme, which automatically unplugs all unused devices after set amount of time to save power, so check your power scheme in control panel.
The third option is that the drive is corrupted. In that case you should check it with HDTune Free (www.hdtune.com) or a utility program provided by the disc manufacturer.

External hard drive doesn't respond


Shut your computer down. Disconnect you external hardrive. Power up your computer again. Power up the Verbatim and then connect to a USB port. You should hear a very quiet 'ping'.

Go to My Computer, and the Verbatim should be showing as one of your drives (probably Drive D). You should be able to open it from there.

Make sure that you have a Desk Top Icon for opening the hardrive, it makes it so much easier. Hope this helps
