Hello, the top thread of my new (vintage) toyota 5001 sewing machine keeps breaking. I have downloaded the manual, and checked and double checked that it is threaded correctly. THe thread seems to stick inside the bobbin just at the end of the cycle (just before the needle gets right to the top). I can't do even one complete stitch.

There are several things that can cause the top thread to break. Tight tension on the bobbin thread could be a problem, but you may have a different issue if the thread is catching in the bobbin case.

Something worth trying: install a brand new needle. Remove all the thread from the machine, ALWAYS RAISE the presser foot, and rethread the top thread from the beginning. Confirm the thread path is correct. Also, rethread the bobbin case and verify the bobbin is turning the correct direction in the bobbin case. Also, try a different type of thread (AVOID old or bargain bin thread.)

One more thing. You mentioned it is a vintage machine. Has it been thoroughly cleaned and oiled recently? These old mechanicals need frequent and regular TLC to keep them purring. It could be the bobbin area needs fresh oil to keep it rotating smoothly.

SOURCE: Machine not sewing

Make sure you have threaded the machine from right to left, it sounds like the needle thread is trapped under the lower looper thread and cannot form a stitch.........start the threading over from scratch like this:

  1. Lower Looper
  2. Upper Looper
  3. Left Needle
  4. Right Needle
Is there a diagram for how to thread on the inside of the door ?

Follow that slowly and carefully to make sure you have not missed any thread guides on the way, as each one needs to be followed through to ensure correct tension and thread progression.

If you are certain that all threaded correctly, did you have a fabric jam and pulled it loose ? If so, the timing may well be affected.

Post an update and we'll get this right.

SOURCE: Bobbin thread breaks

Make sure your bobbin thread is turning clockwise as it sits in the bobbin case. There is a screw on the outside of the bobbin case you can turn with your thumb slightly to adjust tension. If you dangle the case from the thread and give it a light ****, it should move down slightly when doing so-an indicator of good bobbin tension.

SOURCE: Top thread stitches correctly but bottom thread loops.

FYI---- Loops on the bottom-- problem is in the threading..
Loops on the top--- problem is with the bobbin.

My top thread keeps breaking, cleaned and tried new needle but not working

This is always due to incorrect threading or incorrect tension on top or bobbin thread.

All questions need full 'make model (what it is)' please.

Check the manual to double check your threading.

Videos that should help.

Why would that thread break?

Hello, Pat -

Which thread on your sewing machine are you referring to? With either the top thread or the bottom (bobbin) thread, the problem is most likely due to the tension.

Another reason for the top thread breaking could because the machine is not threaded correctly.

If you have the owner's manual for your sewing machine, check it for the settings for the top thread tension and for the correct threading. Also, check the manual for information on the bobbin (bottom) tension.

This web page gives some generic information on sewing machine tensions:

Another option is that you are using old cotton thread to sew with. Over time cotton thread deteriorates and breaks easily. I only know this from personal experience. :)

What is your question?

Sorry, I am not familiar with this brand sewing machine.

Hopefully you have a manual or are able to locate a manual. I wasn't able to locate one.

Probably the best thing to do is check that it is threaded correctly. Misthreading will cause a lot of issues. Also, make sure to install a brand new needle. It may also help to raise the presser foot when threading the upper thread. This works on a lot of machines, so it may with yours as well.

Here are some suggestions for thread breaking:

Why the thread cracked with when i sticked with the machine

Thread breakage could occur for several reasons.

First, try a brand new needle.

Second, use only good quality thread--NOT old thread or bargain bin varieties.

Third, when threading the upper thread, be sure to ALWAYS RAISE the presser foot throughout the threading process.

Verify that the thread path is correct (consult the owner's manual). Incorrect threading will usually break the thread.

Check that the upper thread tension is set at the midway point between the high & low numbers.

My sewing machine keep sewing a little bit but breaks the thread everytime the bottom thread is at 0 and 1 my top thread is at 2 or 3 and the top thread breaks please tell me what wrong I am new too.

possibly the top thread is being restricted in movement
check that the thread is between the tension plates and not behind it or knotted up in the way it is threaded
pull on the needle thread and it should move with a steady pull not very hard
if it is not moving fairly easily the check how you have the thread installed
also old thread will break easily as the bonding used to keep the strands together breaks down and is difficult for the thread to slide though the needle
another point is the needle to hook timing and the clearance there as well .
if there is a problem there , the hook will split the thread from the needle and break it
if you still have problems , take it to a sewing machine service center ( any one ) and they will advise of the problem and show you how to fix it

My Janome keeps breaking its thread on both of my machines-Help!

Check that the needle is in the right way - usually with the flat side away from you, but check your manual. While you have the manual out check that the bobbin is turning the right way too. Hope you fix it

First - check to be sure you have the machine threaded correctly - if the upper thread path is wrong it will break the thread every time you try to sew.
