McIntosh MA6100 integrated Amp Phoho input crackiling

Getting intermittent cracking and popping when trying to listen to turntable through either phono 1 or 2. No such noise when listening to aux/tape/ etc. When reconnecting RCA plugs, the noise stops for awhile then begins again at random. Noise is present through speakers and headphones.

These units are capacitor coupled between stages. It sound to me like one or more of those caps are defective. There is an extra stage of amplification for the Phono inputs. Check the phono pre-amp section for defective caps. Dan

There are 3 possibilities I believe here. First a faulty connection to the cartridge or the cartridge itself. (2) internal (inside the deck) fault on a pre-amp. (3) Fault on the magnetic cartridge pre-amp in your amplifier. This would not effect any other functions on the amp.

I have a McIntosh integrated amp. Sometimes it makes dirty sounds. It dose on and off. It will do it on and off one day and then not do it for days. It does it from both CD players. I think that rules...

Aren't intermittent problems fun? You don't mention the model.

I'm sure it's not the speakers or the CD players. You don't mention if the failing sources have been all digital, analog or a mix. If you pause the source or Mute the sound, is there anything 'dirty' still audible? Yes? Crappy cable shielding, loose cable seating, interference from power sources, dimmer-controlled lighting, etc.

If you have a tape deck try recording whatever you're listening to full-time on it until you capture the 'event'. Then play the tape back and determine if the bad audio was present BEFORE the amplifier channels.

Just look around the web for a "Magnetic Cartridge Preamp".
You plug your turntable into this and the preamp in an aux socket of Surround Amp and the sound will be the same level as the other devices.

Low volume through amplifier

Turntables generate a very low signal. Phono inputs on receivers containa pre-amp section to boost the signal to "line level" or the same level as other audio devices. I would suspect that you need to add that pre-amp section. Phono preamps are available for around $20 or so and are inserted between the turntable and the standard audio input on the receiver or amp.

Hope this helps,
Dan

Are you using the phono input on the Sony? If so, you're getting too much gain, you've already got a phono pre amp in the Behringer. Try using the tape or C.D. input. That should solve it.

Most likely, one channel is blown plus power supply capacitors have to be replaced, switches and controls cleaning, all lamps replaced. That would be an average repair on that model.

Turntables need a preamp due to their very low output compared to modern components. The link above is the one I use. Try connecting to your receiver's phono input if you have one, also try the aux input. If neither of those work, obtain a preamp and you will soon be scratching with the best of them.

Make sure the ground wire from the turntable (they all have one) is grounded to the amp, also the turntable has to be connected to the phono input on the amp. Turntable cant connect to cd or aux. Only phono. Also check to see if there is dust and dirt built up on the needle. clean if needed. most likely a grounding issue
