Sounds like a corrupted OS install. Could be caused by a number of things like: virus, failing Hard Drive, system lost power while doing an update, etc. Very hard to diagnose such a problem without being in front of it.
If the picture blanks it depends on the model number of the set as to what is wrong---some sets if a deflection problem will blank the screen to prevent damage to specific parts.
You should store your numbers on your sim its safer. But the answer to the problem is you cant unless you replace the screen. Alternatively you could try adding an external phone screen via the phone usb port.
