Just want to upgrade to iOS 5. Also can I, do I need further upgrade?
- depends on the model of your iPad:
For the iPad first generation (A1219) to update is only possible with connecting the device to iTunes on a computer.
- but this model supports only iOS 5
- NO iOS 6/7/8
---------------------
for all other models:
There are two ways to upgrade the iOS version of your iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch - via connecting the device to iTunes on a computer
- or directly from within the device, but only since iOS 5, it is possible to upgrade the iOS version without the need to connect the iOS device to a computer (over-the-air update)
just go to: settings - general - software update

I suggest you let it download the updation file because usually there is no option to abort the download and if you do not want to install the update just decline the license agreement this will abort the install and you would be able to use the old version. Note: Once you have installed ios7 there is no direct downgrade available as Apple had stopped signing the previous versions.

depending on the device you have, you will only be allowed to update to a certain point. If you are not able to play the newer games, it might be time to update your device for a newer one.

Connect the iPad to iTunes and check on the "Check for updates" button. iTunes will then download the software and upgrade your iPad.
