SOURCE: New external Hard drive

Open up My Computer and see if there is a new hard drive listed there. It should be automatically detected by your computer, you just need to know where to find it.

SOURCE: tring to back up pc to elements 1 tb external hd

FAT32 is a type of disk management, but this is not used for hard disks normally. i already heard that several external hard disk manufacturers by default format their hard drives to FAT32.
you should connect the hard drive, wait until it's recognised by windows and then simply format it to the NTFS-format.
you can do this by right-clicking the hard disk and choosing 'format' from the drop-down menu. be sure to make copies of all files you keep on the disk, because all files will be lost during the format.

SOURCE: Mac not recognizing External Western Digital HD.

the problem is that your western digital operates using the NTFS (New Technology File System) which is the standard file system of Windows. Apple macs is not interopable with native NTFS therefore you need to install a read-write NTFS file-system driver on your mac.

an excellent free mac NTFS driver can be found here-
http://mac.softpedia.com/get/System-Utilities/NTFS-3G.shtml

download and install the software then restart your mac.

How can I find the files on my 1tb, seagate external drive?

You maybe removed the driver for the hard drive when you ran the anti virus. Those programs can do some strange things. If you click on the start, then computer. It will show all hard drives on your system. If you cannot find your files. I would think your computer does not see the external hard drive. To reinstall the driver, you would need to go to the driver's manufactures web site to down load or yours may have came with a disk. If so just run the disk. Could do a system restore , but that would be last option .

While copying the files from C drive it started giving Error: 080070057

Can you copy those files to a USB memory-stick?
Do you get any error-messages when reading from your 'C:' drive?
If yes, then your 'C:' disk-drive is "dying".
If no, then your disk-drive is OK, and its the external storage device that is "dying". Make a backup of the files on that device, if you can.

The only "good-news" is that the Seagate probably still is under warranty -- Seagate will replace it, at their cost, not your cost.

Seagate 1TB external hard drive requires formatting P/N 9SF2A4-500. Admittingly it was sitting on top of my PC and the kids have pushed it off several times (approx a foot and a half fall). I've attempted...

I'm glad you gave Test Disk a shot!

Does the computer assign the drive a letter?

Does it say "New Hardware Found" when you plug it into the computer.

When you used Test Disk did it list the drive like the picture below ( just an example)

Most drives that are dropped will damage the read / write heads. Don't open the drive!
