My 1tb simplesave drive is no longer accessable. when I use windows explorer both the false cd drive e: and the main disk F: are detected but widows explorer becomes "not responding" when i click on f. Computer management/storage shows both the E: and F: drives as "healthy". Task manager shows the Hplauncher.exe as running until I click on the F: in windows explorer which changes it to "not responding"
NO PC stated ! (impossible to help much)?
No simplesave model stated, some are huge hdd others not. some are ssd.? matters big time what is there.
power is FIRST>! no power no joy
does the actual drive removed work inside any PC? yes/no? (it is SATA drive actually there, simple)
if no,it's bad. if yes?, the external needs help. (ask)
SIMPLESAVE is just external HDD./ this
https://www.cnet.com/products/hp-simplesave-external-hard-drive-hard-drive-1-tb-usb-2-0-series/specs/
did you forget to USE THE HP power pack to it?
no huge 1TB hdd, will run lacking that, impossible
but easy for SSD and 1/2 the time with 2.5" drives.
it weights 2.2lbs so is 3.5" large HDD like I have
I've built 3 from scratch, (USB3 -Esata too)
lots of models of simplesave, or 10 years.
some have power pack, (2 lb drive) above, .
others none, and thin and light.
the problems are manifold
1: using USB1.1 port, ? try them all ?
2: using USB2 but DM shows it is only 100mA port or 500ma? (works on 2.5" but not 3.5" drives)
3; power pack not plugged, in
4: ;unstated OS infected or USB ports dead, (drivers bad)
making the 3.5" drives HDD, work can be hard.
cures here.

if yours is the tiny one, 2.5" test it on all USB ports , if fail try other PC, with 500mA ports
work now good, no the HDD is bad,
test HDD removed now.
ive been running huge HDD external since the first ones ever, and never have problems, (I build my own)
first test is :
make sure USB finds it. in Device manager.
then see if diskmanagment, shows it.
if it does and no drive letter , then give it one.
so true getting XP to work now is hard.
XP is dead, Pnp at MS is dead.
only XP Activation works now.
why not upgrade,
or do the tests above, see if
its
this PC bad
or all PC dead on that drive, (easy no, billions of PC now. waiting )
the first test is ear test
Pluge in the HDD, (usb device)
with ear to case here its motor start spin and run.
whirrrrrrrr.... yes. or click repeat (***** clicks)
or nothing, then to newer PC
a disktop is best its more powerful usb ports.
(can prove that)
try as many USB ports you can,
windows goes DINGdong at it finds the USB connected. if not XP is dead. (drivers)
if 3.5" hdd version of the device, the power pack MUST BE USED to get the 2amp motor startup current to happen. or its all hopeless
do know this too, on 2.5' version
many 2.5" drives take 1 full amp to start the motor up. many laptops can not do that
for sure USB1. but even many old USB2 are only 100mA rated.
a hopeless event, we call it getting over the startup current hump.
All hdd made will not set the busy, status false((ready) until the motor reaches, full RPM and can unlock the heads. (it's smart)
it does protect its self from you. in this way.
if the heads hit the platters, it will crash.
for sure,.(flying heads they are)
better for folks not HDD savvy
is buy a SSD external and all this funny hdd rules
go byebye, , upgrade.

SOURCE: not recognizing external USB hard
Is this hard drive under warranty, if yes get it replaced or fixed if not get a new one
SOURCE: My HP SimpleSave can not
Try setting a drive letter in Admin Tools Disk Management. If you move these drives around they lose their identity. Lost in Space so to speak.
SOURCE: want to install my 2tb
try other usb port, or other computer and see whether the hdd is detected. If still not, try to go to device manager ( http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000833.htm ), and then assign a drive letter to the hdd. After that, try to access it from Computer, if not able to access it, format it (use quick format) and then use this data recovery program called asoftech data recovery to recover your files. you can find it from facebook
