Hmmm... doesn't sound too good does it? Have you tried another CF card? I know you said it doesn't work even without a card but...
Also one last thing to try is to tkae out both batteries, the main one and the slim watch style backup battery that sits right next to the main one under the cover labelled CR2016. Leave them both out for an hour and see what happens. NOTE this will probably reset your camera to factory defaults and may reset the photo numbering counter back to zero. Worth a try?
This sounds like it might be a defective CCD imager. If so, Canon should fix this for you for free, including free shipping both ways. This is regardless of your camera's warranty status. Please check the following two links for more info:

If the viewer is working fine, then it is not the same CCD problems. If you sent this in to Canon for repair, I am sure they will charge you for it.

Reset your camera to the factory settings. it will fix it.
Then, you can start changing the settings again.
