It is my understanding the xfinity remote is designed only to control comcast set top box and TVs. It also can control audio receivers. It is unlikely you can control a DVD player with it.
At best you could try and use the programming instructions on page 5 of the manual and see if it picks up your DVD player. Otherwise it might be better to use the existing remote controller you have and program the Comcast set top box to it. You need to find the codes from the programming instructions of the original remote control and you will also need to know the model number of your comcast box.
You may need to buy a different universal remote control. In my experience, not all of them work with every device.
I've been really pleased with the Logitech Harmony remotes. You program through your computer, they're more expensive than the cheapo dollar store universal remotes, but the do a great job and handle almost anything, because the databases are frequently updated.
DVD players usually connect using either an RCA cable (generally two or three wires, Red, White, and or Blue/Black/Green). The ends look like an umbrella. These are standard connections. Other connections are USB connectors and direct + and - wires. I must assume your is using RCA format. Match the color from the output on the player to input on the TV. That all there is to that!
I strongly advise against a unirversal remote as i have had several hundred customers come to me asking why wont it work on their unit. If you can get the current remote repaired or are able to locate another remote, i strongly recommend that course of action.
Its likely that the new new remote control has specific codes for the components it can operate. You should look to the remote manual or online source to find the code(s) for the DVD player you have. Without knowing the remote you purchased, its hard to locate codes for you.
