SOURCE: Canon EOS/Rebel XT won't power up
Joe, this happened to me, just tonight... I got a new CF card and stuck it in, turned it on and one CF card flash. Completely dead from there. I found one of the CF card pins bent over, shorted out the socket and blew the mainboard fuse. I took the camera apart, found the fuse (labelled K) about under the set button area) I bridged the fuse with a bit of solder, straightened out the pin in the socket, put it all back together and it's working fine. The fuse is under the right side shield cover, it's labelled with a letter K. There is another fuse on the power inlet board (below the shutter button) and it's labelled 'P'...

You don't need to have the CD software to download your pictures, especially if you shoot in JPEG mode. Just put your memory card in a card reader and it will autimatically launch. Click on the DCIM folder and all your pictures will be in there. Press 'CTRL' + 'A' to select them all and then 'CTRL' + 'C' to copy them. Find a folder you want to put them in and press 'CTRL' + 'V' to paste them there.
Make a CD copy of your files and or print them as storing them on a hard drive is not 100% safe.

Please discard that the USB port or the USB cable are defective. You can do it if you try to hook your camera in other personal computer using the same USB cable. If it works, then follow the next instructions.
Connect your camera to the PC thru the USB cable and turn it on.
If you are using Windows, go to the Control panel - System - Hardware - Devices - and check if there is any device that was not recognized by Windows. Such devices are marked with a yellow question mark.
If so, get into the device item and with right mouse click, select to update the device driver.
If there was not unrecognized device, then you can unistall your USB port driver and then run a change hardware status to recognize the USB port again, then run the update driver routine.
Regards,

It could be a number of things. The first thing you shouild do is remove the back cover and check for loose screws. If you don't find any, the problem may be a damaged battery door switch, a damaged memory card slot door switch, or worse- it may be a defective power board.
