Months ago I came home to my microwave making continuous, rhythmic grinding noises when it was not in use. I unplugged it and have left it unplugged for months. Today I decided to plug it back in before going out to buy a new one. It is not making any noise and I heated water and it seemed to work fine. I'm wondering what may have caused the noise and if I need to buy a replacement?
It depends what was making the noise. a bad door switch could cause the turntable motor and the fan to fun. If is heating it may still be worth repairing. I would check the door switches. See if you notice any browning around the plastic insulators where the wires plug onto the switches. If so, you will need to replace bad switch and run new wires and connectors to the new switch too.

It will need a new turntable motor. If you or a friend decide to work on it, we have *critical* safety, disassembly, and troubleshooting info at our site, which is linked at our listing here on FixYa: http://tinyurl.com/yzjozk You can find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your base model number (without the suffix) here: http://tinyurl.com/gv383

This sounds like the stirrer. If it sticks or stops, the microwaves can damage or destroy it. You may have a bad stirrer or magnetron. There is an important bulletin that covers these problems. To see if yours is covered, see: http://207.234.249.73/mwd/ge_mw_mag_kit_bulletin.pdf If you need more help, please follow-up.

Many thanks to e3enigma above! I removed the synch motor under the turntable; all other microwave functions work fine and the grinding noise is gone, hooray! A trip to the appliance parts store tomorrow for a replacement synchronous motor and all should be well. Thanks again!

possibly the "stirrer" motor - this is in the top and turns a metal reflecting ring to disperse the microwaves around the oven more evenly. About $70 on GE site for my oven.

What up, Roller?
The straight up answer to your question is "Yes, you can continue using the oven without the stirrer motor". Here's the thing, though... the stuff you put in it won't heat evenly. I'm talkin' about big stuff; turkey, ham... stuff like that. And if you've utilized the defrost function in the past, you can forget about that now. But if you use it to heat up a dinner plate or a cup of coffee, you're good to go.
Another thing. You're motor is not the problem, it the coupler that connects to the motor shaft that has given out on you. That's the thing that connects to the motor shaft. You can see it, by lifting the glass outta your MW... see that little plastic drive gear there? It has three spokes on it. That's the gremlin in the machine.
The part number for it is WB06X10144. You can call a local appliance parts place or you can get one online (<---just type in the part number to a search engine).
Simple to replace... pull the old one out and slide the new one into place. See? Easy! Oh yeah, then you have to plug the motor back in, but hey! You already know how to do that! Cool!
