I believe this is what Verizon had me do:
Make sure the phone is off. Take the back off the phone. Turn the phone on...while booting up, plug the phone into the charger. When the phone turns on completely, take the battery out of the back of the phone. Then turn the phone off, unplug the charger. Put the battery back in and turn on the phone. That should have reset it.
I might have missed a step... if I did... just call customer support... and ask for a hard reset. They will walk through it with you. This usually happens because of water damage... but our phone did not have any.. so not sure what caused it.

ok you got to open it up then check for corrosion its very hard to spot but if you have a good magnifing glass and lighting you can spot it. scrape it off but not enough to hurt the board then it should work do not try the fork method!!! you could fry your phone if you are not careful. what happened is you got moisture in the phone and it has corroded a spot on the board thats it do not take it to your verizon store they will take your phone and charge you for a new one i think its a liability scam but i hope this helped!

No you won't, all you have to do is, while the phone is on, stick a piece of tin foil (a SMALL piece, preferably folded up) into the slot where you plug in the charger and wiggle it around until the phone shuts off. Then plug it in, turn it back on, and everything will be back to normal. The same thing happened to me and this advice was given to me, so I tried it and crazy as it sounds, it worked. Don't waste your money getting it repaired when it doesn't require anything more than a little foil. The number one cause of "car kit" is: babies sticking the phone in their mouths. :)
