You need to send a picture of the compressor. May times they are a generic compressor with a ABAC pump on them. If the unit is not holding air it is normally the reed valves or the head gasket is blown.
Both are easy fixes if you can get the parts.

Its probably a oil less compressor so it could be the reed valves are bad or the piston rings are bad.

SOURCE: Oil capacity for craftsman air compressor circa 1978 model #106..

I have a 2hp craftsman air compessor with a two cylinder pump, Here is the info from my manual as far as oil capacitity:

Remove oil fill plug and slowly add
a compressor oil until it is even with the
top of the oil fill hole. NOTE: Do not
allow oil to be lower than 3/8"
from the top at any time. When filling
the crankcase, the oil flows very slowly
into the pump. If the oil is added too
quickly, it will overflow and appear to
be full. NOTE: Crankcase oil capacity is
approximately 16 fluid ounces.

I buy my compessor oil from Lowes in the tool department. It comes in 16oz and sells for about $3. I wouldnt worry about how many ounces it holds but rather that the oil level is to top of filler hole. Lowes also sells a synthetic oil for about $7 and is recommended for severe conditions (hot / cold / used all day). Good Luck!

My sears air compressor model 919.156781 will not pump up past 40 psi , then motor then compressor stalls and motor gets hot , have to unplug . I have had the motor checked

When it gets to 40 psi turn it off and see if you hear air leaking down from somewhere....if so listen and feel around the edges of the compressor head. If you hear or feel air leaking there you may need to replace a head gasket.

Why won't it pump up past 40#?

If you don't have any air leaks, the cylinder head gasket is probably bad on the pump. Easy fix for less than $10. you can get the parts you need here:
http://www.mastertoolrepair.com/sears-craftsman-919195411-p-48270.html or ebay.com. For around $50 you can get the whole rebuild kit.

Why can`t my compressor pump over ten pounds ?

You didn't state what model compressor you have so in gerneral: if you have no leaks, remove the air pump head to check the reed valves on the valve plate and the condition of the piston, piston ring(s) and cylinder. If the reed valves are broken or warped from heat they won't seal properly. If the piston ring(s) are broken or the cylinder is badly scored air will leak past the piston instead of compressing and going into the tank.

My model number 91965110 compressor runs but won't fill the tank

More then likely it is either in the valve plate (bad flapper valve or gasket) or the piston and sleeve have worn out which is usually from scoring. You will see that when you take the head off to inspect.

I have a craftsman 1.5 hp 15 gallon air compressor model number 919.167242 . for some reason it will not charge air into the tank pass 40 psi.

it sounds like you need a new ring and cylinder kit. It looks like part number d30324. Go to www.searspartsdirect.com and enter your model number into the search and you can look for yourself and get pricing.

Quits pumping at 40 pounds but compressor motor still runs

Did you unlock the ring around the pressure adjustment knob? turn clockwise all the way and relock.

Craftsman compresser md 919155730

This sounds like a pressure switch failure. follow the power cord to where it enters the compressor and the switch should be there. you should be able to order a new one through sears service center. Good luck.

Leaks air at the pressure switch

start your compressor and let it buid up pressure to turn off. then unplug from power.lossen the fill tube that goes from the pump to the tank. when you loosen it. if it leaks air then your check valve is bad and will have to be replaced.
