Will sd850 take an sdhc card?

That's it. Is my Canon Powershot SD850 IS compatable with the SDHC cards? I want an 8GB, but the reg SD's are more expensive.

When I put a card in the SD850 IS I get the message Memory card error

Your memory card my be too big or too modern for this older digital camera. Make sure the card is either SD or SDHC (not SDXC) and I would guess no more than 8GB.

Transcend 8gb poswert

Although the Canon Powershot A630 is a great camera, it has an age.
It is made for SD cards and since the A630 saw the world there were several changes with SD cards. The cards grew in size and till 4Gbyte they were called SD card. Nowedays you only can get few 4GByte cards called SD. Soon after the 4Gbyte mark was reached they started to make SDHC cards. that is why most 4Gbyte cards now are also SDHC. Till they reached 32 GByte not much changed, only speed was becoming better. After the 32 GByte the SDXC cards came.

For every step up, the equipment that used SD cards had to be changed. The newer apparatus can use old SD or "lesser" SD cards. The old apparatus only are capable of using SDHC card if a software upgrade is done. But only apparatus close to the introduction of a new card could be upgraded with new firmware. So if Canon never offered an upgrade, you only can use normal SD cards and no SDHC cards. Your Trancend 8Gb card is definitely a SDHC card.
If you want a "Big" card for your Canon, try to buy a Platinum 4GB SD card. Please take care the advert does not say SDHC or SDXC

Memory card error SDHC Toshiba

I've checked out your Canon Powershot SD550, and this previously written answer definitely applies to you, Wendy:

The problem is that your camera is only compatible with SD cards, not SDHC cards. You bought a larger card for your older camera, not noticing that it was SDHC (or not knowing that it mattered). The new card doesn't work, not because it or the camera is broken, but because it's not compatible.

Cards up to 2Gb are generally SD.
Cards of 4Gb are generally SDHC.
Cards over 8Gb have to be SDHC.

(There are exceptions. Sometimes, manufacturers make 4Gb SDHC cards but some have errors; they disable half of the chip and sell it as 2Gb, but it's still SDHC. 4Gb cards are almost always SDHC because they're cheaper, but 4Gb SD cards do exist. They are so rare that I've even seen a guru on this site claim they don't. I did own one once, but it was very expensive and turned out to be so unreliable that I had to return it. I don't recommend looking for one, because of the problems.)

Your solution is to go find a 2Gb card, and be extra sure that it doesn't say "SDHC" on it.

My camera canoon powershot sd850 is saying card locked! I can't seem to find how to unlock it..

Take the memory card out of the camera and look at it. SD and SDHC cards have a slide switch along one edge. The position farthest from the contacts locks the card, protecting it from writes. The position nearest the contacts unlocks the card. If the switch is already in the proper position, slide it fully the other way and then back again.

If that doesn't work, try another card.

Camara screen shows"card is locked" and is not allowing me to take a picture

There are several possible causes for "memory card locked" or "memory card error". Some include trying to use of a 4GB SDHC card with an older camera made before SDHC format came out. Others include problems with the switch on the side of the card, and the switch internal to the camera. The problem may also arise from simple formatting problems if the card has never been formatted in the camera (note that this will also erase the card). Troubleshooting tips for this problem may be found at this link.

My canon sd600 is not reading PNY sdhc memory card. msg says card is locked. it's clearly not locked

HC or High Capacity is not compatible with this camera. You have to buy a memory card which says only "SD" and NOT "SDHC". Cards of 2Gb and less are usually "SD". Cards of 8Gb and more are always "SDHC" for technical reasons. Cards of 4Gb can be either, but the SDHC kind are much more common, because they're cheaper and newer.
