Here are some simple things to try first for a camera that won't power on. They won't work for every case, but they're worth a try:

Here are some simple things to try first for a camera that won't power on. They won't work for every case, but they're worth a try. Pay particular attention to the small contact switches on the battery and flash card doors. Also inspect the battery contact prongs to make sure they haven't been bent to the point that they're not springing the battery to make contact with the battery door.
Testimonial: ""Some simple things to try" had the answer! The flash card door switch was not being closed (door pin had chipped off). Thanks loads for the help!"

This is either a "stuck shutter" or "CCD image sensor failure". If the latter, Canon will fix for free (more details later). First you need to check if it's a stuck shutter problem.
To confirm a stuck shutter, put the camera in any mode other than "Auto", and turn the flash OFF (you don't want to blind yourself for the next step). Next look down the lens and take a picture. You should see a tiny flicker in the center of the lens as the shutter opens and closes. If no movement is seen, then you likely have a stuck shutter. If so, please see this link for further info and a simple fix that may help.
If movement is seen, then it's likely a failed CCD, for free worldwide, and may also include free shipping both ways (free shipping varies with countries). This is regardless of your camera's warranty status. Please check this link for more info.
