Do you have a film in the camera? If so is it all exposed? Best thing to do is press the film rewind button and try the lever at the same time - this will eliminate stuck film issues as it removes film tension from the system. If this does not solve the issue then you need someone to have a closer look.

When you press on the shutter release does it "click"? A few hard taps with the end of your finger onto the shutter reelase button may unjam it if it is stuck...

As long as these lights come on, P, M, A, *, ^ ,- You have put the batteries in correctly, and they have juice. Otherwise, you got the wrong batteries or put them in backwards.
