I have dell vostro 1510 with Sony NEC OptiArc AD-7640A slot DVD-RAM. All of a sudden, it can READ & WRITE CDs and WRITE DVDs but the strange thing is it can not READ any kind of DVDs, not even the one which it Wrote ! ! !.
this happend after I read from some DVD and after a little while I Ejected it and inserted an other DVD and kept spinning and that was the end.
also I figured out that this problem not relevant to the operating system because the laptop can not BOOT from DVDs (only CDs). even so I installed a fresh copy of windows XP & used the DELL firmware for that model of drive but the problem is STILL.
think about it. its really weard ! ! (can't read but can write?)

Try to play the cd that you have wrote with other machine if it was able to read with other machine then your dvd is faulty.
If it cannot play with other machine, then there is a problem with the software that you use in cd writing or the dvd rom drive. Try to re-install both drivers, then play a cds.
