You very likely need a new driver, if one is available. A search of the Simpletech site does not indicate there is one, as the drive is indicated as having been compatible with OS's through Windows XP. The driver download page is at http://www.simpletech.com/site_cms/content/support-drivers-software - and as you will see there is no upgraded driver for this hard drive. I would suggest contacting them (there is a link on the same page) to see if one is available, or if there is another workaround.

Does you drive make any sounds like these?
If yes you have a mechanical problem and you should get a specialist to work on it if you need that data.
If not - try to remove the drive from the enclosure and connect it directly to the computer to recover your files.
SOURCE: I need driver software for my external hard drive
I checked for one on SimpleTech's (Hitachi) website. The only show a driver for Windows 98. This leads me to think you don't need any drivers. USB is hot pluggable. Just plug the drive in. Windows XP/Vista/NT will plug a driver in for you (a USB driver). Drive will be given an access letter. You can then access like any other drive from Windows Explorer. Sometimes, USB drives have additional software on them (known as firmware) that you can then run directly from the drive. The firmware is not require to use the drive, but may offer features like backup software.

Try connecting the drive to a different computer, to see if your computer is the problem.
If necessary, open the external case, and separate the disk-drive from the USB-to-disk-drive adapter.
Connect the disk-drive as a "slave" disk-drive in some computer, to see if the disk-drive itself still can be accessed.
If not, and you have "important" data on the disk-drive, search the Internet for a professional "Data Recovery Service" -- you ship your disk-drive to them, pay them a lot of money, and they repair the disk-drive, just long-enough to copy your files to a brand-new disk-drive.

Hello mbrin72,
If there is no activity when powering on your external drive, this usually indicates a failing drive. If you do not hear a hum or feel vibrations, this means the drive has gone bad.
Check the warranty of your product. The manufacturer may replace it at no cost. (other than shipping)
If recovering the data is of high importance, I recommend this service: http://www.datarecovery.net/hard-drive-recovery.html
I highly recommend getting a quote. Although, they do not charge if they can not recover your data.
Hope this helps!
