Vista has most drivers, and certainly supports your printer.
Try this routine.
First turn on your computer.
Now, turn on printer, and connect the USB.
Vista will recognize it.
i) Go to printers and faxes and set your printer as default, because there are other software like One note which could be default.
OR ii) Go to your word document, ctrl+P for print settings, choose your printer from the drop down menu

It just won't work. The light is green but I send a document to the printer and nothing happens. When I turn it on the light is red but if I put the "job cancel" button it will got to green.

Go to "Printers and Faxes" in the "Control Panel" and check to see if your printer shows any documents waiting to be printed, Cancel these documents and Right click your printer icon
select "Properties" and select "Print Test Page" to test your connection...For varies reasons documents sometimes fail to print and the printer queue backs up

My computer doesn't send picture to be printed to my hp photosmart 8450. I have Windows Vista and it worked before. Now why does it show an error in the printer info and also, this printer is set as...

If there is something wrong with the printer, you should get a error message describing the error.

Does the printer have a blinking orange light after you give the print command? Then there is an error in the printer. If you have documents in the print queue, delete them. Remove the printer cable. Shut the printer down, shut the computer down. Reconnect the cable and turn everything on again.
If there is still a problem there might be something wrong with your printer.

If you don't have a blinking light after the print command on the printer, then try changing the printer cable. If not working, try another USB port. If still not working, reinstall the printer.

Downloaded driver from HP. connected printer via

HP Support says “If the Ready light is blinking, and the Go light is on, it indicates Data in the printer memory is waiting to be printed. Pressing the GO button prints from Tray 1 or from another tray if Tray 1 is empty and the paper size is supported in the other Tray. Pressing the JOB CANCEL button cancels the current job and the printer returns to ready.
Make sure the paper size is correctly defined.

I can't send a fax from my vista program with out printing out the fax first and sending it the old way, and that waste paper. in the xp or word 2003 I can go to the send in the file and the fax wizzard...

You need to go to printers and choose 'add a printer'. Under add printer, choose the printer called "MS FAX." That will install microsoft fax as a printer. Next, print your document by going to File, Print... (make sure it says "PRINT..." then you should see a selection screen, choose ms fax, and there you go. That should do it.

Printer only sends paper to tray 1 when printing from procomm...

Sounds like a Procomm issue. Since I am not familiar with Procomm I can help you any further. But here is my analysis: All other application except for Procomm prints to tray 2. That is because all those applications use the setting as configured in your printer properties in Windows. What Procomm seems to be doing is trying to load a special paper from the manual feed tray, that is tray 1. You will have to check with in this Procomm application where you can change the printer properties so you can specify it to use tray 2 as the default. This is all within Procomm and has nothing to do with Windows nor your printer.

Problem with printing texts

Can you print 'test prints' via windows? If so, it is something to do with MS word.

Does it have the same problem in other applications, or in only MS Word?
Have you downloaded the most current driver for your printer and for Windows Vista from HP's website? If not, do that first.

First, you need to try update the latest microsoft office patch file from microsoft or you can open the MS Word, go to "HELP" menu select the update MS Word or related. Try the latest patch file first. You also can try windows update and select custom update, see their list have this problem solution or not. Second, you need to go to HP website download latest driver for LJ1020 and suitable use on Vista.
