My dryer quit working and the motor would hum when I pressed the start button but would stop immediately after I released the button. The Repair company found large amounts of lint, cleaned said lint and the dryer ran. Used it for several drying cycles but it still had a loud hum and started to fail until I lightened the load. Finally after three or four drying cycles, it quit; wouldn't start, hummed if I pressed the start button but stopped when I released the button. Came back to repair company that said I needed a new motor. Over the past week, I have run the dryer for a single drying cycle of about 40 minutes, then it quits. If I leave it for a day and return, I can run it again. Before I spend any more money, I'd like to be sure it is the motor and not something else.

This sounds like the motor is siezed or burned out. I wish I knew how much a motor is, but the Neptune is a good dryer so it would probably be worth it to get a new motor if indeed that's the problem.

Motors of this sort have a "start" winding, to give them an extra boost to get them turning. Once they're turning, the start winding shuts off. Critical to this is the start capacitor which, when shorted, causes the exact symptom you've described. The motor's "regular" winding gets power (and then hums), but it needs that extra boost to actually start turning. Have someone check the capacitor (with an ohmeter) or check to see if the motor's start winding is open (broken).
Sounds like the motor is cutting out on its thermal fuse. The only cure is to change the motor.

I'd sure start by making sure the belt isn't broken. You can usually see the belt with a flashlight after accessing the panel (some are in front, others in the rear) - don't go probing around bare armed without unplugging the unit....

Sounds like a weak motor. You'll have to get a new motor installed. They are fairly inexpensive and easy to install yourself on that type of machine if you are handy. Motor is located in the bottom right of the machine, attached to the drum belt through a small pulley underneath the drum next to the motor.
