You should take the phone by a provider, and let them help you figure out what's going on. If it's a software problem, they can probably fix it, but if it's a hardware fault, they can also provide a replacement.

well there are many people with that same problem when i had mine i would never send multimedia through messages. but you can always sent it through blue-tooth!! sry i couldn't be of much more help
Could be that the image file size is too large--seems to top out around 65 KB, then I get that same message when trying to download an image. If possible, ask your friend to resize the image to something like ~160x240 pixels, which should reduce the file size to something manageable, and then to resend.
