If your OS is vista, follow the steps in the following link
http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/102005-reset-user-account-password.html

If your OS is MAC, then follow these instructions,

Although there’s no real way to recover a lost root password, youcan change the root password even if you do not know the current one.You must have physical access to the machine in order to accomplishthis task.

1. Click Restart at the login window
2. While the computer is restarting, hold down “Command-S” until yousee text scrolling through the window. This boots the computer intosingle user mode.
3. At the Localhost% prompt type:
/sbin/fsck -y
/sbin/mount -uw /
/sbin/SystemStarter
You will then see various services starting up.
4. When the Localhost% prompt reappears, type:
passwd [username]
It will then ask you to type the new root password twice, so do so.
(Though I’ve not tried it, it appears you can type niutil -list ./users to get a list if users if you do not know the username….ifsomeone wants to verify this, I would be most appreciative).
5. After entering the new password, type:
reboot
6. At the login window, enter the username with the new password.Once you are logged in, you can use the Multiple Users application(/Applications/Utilities) to change your user’s password, or create anew user account.
Note: this may not work for newer versions of OS X; I think they didsomething about it in a security update. I hope this helps you with Macintosh password recovery.

Hope this helps,

~regards,
Jegan

I assume that this is Window XP or Vista. If so I hope you have another user account. If you have another user account you can get in and create another account to replace the one you just lost. Make sure to give it administrator rights. So system designers make a backdoor user named Admin with a password. I make mine as Admin and no password. Just hit enter. Maybe you can log is as one of them. Otherwise good luck finding the password. There really isn't a way around it that I know of. There are some things you can do to retrieve the files from that user account though if you need to.

I have a emachine w3619, i let my son use it and he changed the login password and cant remember it. and i cant figure out how to get into my computor. how do i go about getting into my computor

Which Password? Bios Password? Hard Drive Password? Windows Welcome Screen User Logon Password?

Which Operating System? Windows XP? Windows Vista? Windows 7?

OK, if you are running Windows 7, Microsoft tightened security on it so you've got to have a password reset disk which 99% of the people who own laptops with windows 7 fail to do. It should be one of the first things you do when you buy the laptop. Otherwise, you're faced with reinstalling the Operating System or possibly doing a System Recovery.

If you're on Windows XP or Vista try this:

Turn off the computer, then hit the power button to turn it back on and immediately start hitting the F8 key repeatedly until you see the Safe Mode option. Select SAFE MODE and let the computer boot up. When it gets to the User Login screen it will show the Administrator userid and the userid for which you forgot the password. Sign in as the Administrator (hopefully you didn't put a password on it and forgot it too). Once the desktop appears it will look different, the screen will be darker and the icons bigger, but this is normal for safe mode.

Click Start/Control Panel/User Accounts
When the User Accounts screen opens, click on the userid for which you forgot the password. Select the option to REMOVE PASSWORD.

Reboot your machine.

I have emachine desk top computer how do I lock this computer only to open with password

this can be achieved in one of two ways. Usually people will set up a Windows account password, this process outlined very well in the following document-
http://www.wikihow.com/Set-Windows-Password

alternatively you can set a BIOS Startup password which is outlined here-
http://www.lockdown.co.uk/?pg=biospsw

important- ensure that the password is difficult enough to guess but also one that you will remember as once the password is set it would be an extremely technical/difficult process to recover if you forget it.

I dust my coputer out .

Hello....Thats definitly a windows password!! you most likely hit the hibernate button and put in sleep mode. It's very easy to get pass previous passwords with XP (Home or Pro)

There is a boot disk you can download at:
http://home.eunet.no/~pnordahl/ntpasswd/

that will let you reset the password of any account on NT4, Windows2000 or XP. Just follow all the default settings which are for the admin account. Used it many times with great success.
They also have a bootable CD image you can download.
