A CDRW/DVD is a CD-burner and DVD-ROM combined unit. It is not meant to record DVDs only CDs.

It will not recognise a blank DVD as it is unable to read any file system.

OS is Windows XP Professional, my cd drive cannot read the data stored on a DVD disk. My driver is HL-DT-ST CDRW/DVD GCC4482. Thank you

Windows XP is no longer supported, you should up-grade to Win 7 or buy a new computer. As for the DVD that it can't read, try it on a friend's computer and see if it works. If it does, your DVD/CD drive is defective or there is a software driver issue which means you can't receive support from Micorsoft.
tip

DRIVER NEEDED: Hitachi hl-dt-st rw/dvd gcc-4241n (Windows XP Home)

DRIVER NEEDED: Hitachi hl-dt-st rw/dvd gcc-4241n (Windows XP) [IDE]

Simple solution:

Situation
There is a yellow exclamation mark for CD/DVD drives in Device Manager. The device status in the properties of the driver might indicate an error code, for example 32, 37, or 39. Or the drive simply does not appear in My Computer or Device Manager.

Solution

To solve the issue, you have to edit the Windows Registry:
Click Start, then Run, type REGEDT32 and click OK.
Locate and then remove the following registry values:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlCl ***{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}LowerFilters

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlCl ***{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}UpperFilters

Close Registry Editor.
Reboot the system for the changes to take effect.

Note: Some programs are unable to detect the CD/DVD drive after these steps. To solve this, simply re-install the program in question, eg: usually your recording software. Also, in few instances the order in which the programs are (re-)installed can make a difference.

When i upgraded to xp my cdrw/dvd drive has not worked.

the problem is not a driver. if windows xp doesn't recognize your dvd drive, is because is dead.... or disable on the bios.... check the bios and see if in the page where shows all the drives, appears your dvd drive. if not, the drive past away..... :-) . maybe if you disconnected the drive, try to reconnect it. plz excuse my bad english, i'll wait your comments bye!

Won't recognize blank dvd

Chek wtat is written on front panel
If it DVD-RW it can record only DVD-R blank, if it + so only +R
or DVD-RAM. If it is DVD +/- RW or RAM it can record any disk.
Also chek the speed for you DVD and disk you using.
If you dvd maximum speed for recording is for example 2.7, 4, 8 you should use only DVD with max speed 2.7, 4, 8 or 1-8, 1-16 etc. So they should be labeled the same as you DVD
