You will need to install what is called a codec pack but the easiest way to solve your problem would be to download and install a free program called VLC media player. VLC will play just about any DVD without a problem.
Make sure first your drive is in fact a DVD player and not just a CD player. If you are using windows xp you can click on start button, click on control panel, open system, select hardware tab and click
on Device manager. The picture below you will see if your computer came with a DVD or just a regular CD player. If its a DVD it should come with a software like PowerDVD or Cyberlink that you need to install. If you dont have any of these or they are not working you can try downloading VLC player using this link http://download.cnet.com/VLC-Media-Player/3000-13632_4-10267151.html.
.
Do the following: 1- Right Click my computer. 2- Select Manage. 3- Select Device Manager. 4- Select from the right pane , DVD/CD-ROM Drive. 5- See what comes under it , and read the letters.
CD-R = Only read CD CD-RW = Read & Write CD DVD-R = Read DVD & CD (mostly write CD also) DVD-RW = Read and Write everything Except DVD-Dl
You can install another DVD player software.
there are plenty of free players on the internet that you can download, or you can buy one at your local software dealer. Once you install this, the newer video codecs should be installed
Sounds like you need a DVD decoding software, ie... winvid, interdvd, and powerdvd. Windows media player will play some DVD's, but many DVD's, especially newer ones, need an additional decoder in order to work. You will be able to find the software at filehippo.com, download.com, or IBM's support site. Keep in mind that burning software, ie... nero, roxio, and dvd shrink, have decoders in order to burn the DVD, so they will work as a decoder in conjunction with your media player.
