Media Device for Audio Driver missing

I took my laptop to Circuit City for them to fix and when it came back the audio was missing. All they were suppose to do was reinstall the operating system but they did more and the guy who worked on my computer actually messed it up even more. I have a Compaq Presario V5000. I went to the Compaq site and tried to download the driver (Conexant Function Audio Driver) but after it downloaded i encountered the problem with installing. I got past the terms of agreement but then a dialogue box with (Driver Installation Failed: Could not find the MEDIA device for this driver) popped up and now I dont know what to do to make my computer go back to normal HELP!!!!!!!!!

Audio driver is missing..how to fix it?

Try and restore the PC to an earlier set date. If this wont solve log on to the ASUS site and dowwnload the drivers for your model. Now install and check. Make sure there are audio/media supporting programs installed.

No audio output device is installed

Your audio driver may be missing or corrupt. Go to the device manager and look under the audio devices. If it doesn't list your audio device or has exclamation mark (!) next to your audio driver, then you're missing the driver.

If you see your audio device listed, then either your driver files are corrupt or your audio device is damaged.

In either case, go to Toshiba homepage, search for the audio device driver related to your laptop's model. Download it and install to see if that corrects the problem. If it doesn't correct your problem, it's possible your Southbridge chip may be defective, in which case, not much you can do.

How to fix media problems

Go to device manager and right click on the audio device and select "Update Driver". That may work. If it is not in device manager then you will have to get the Audio driver installer from the manufacturers web site

Acer aspire laptop seems to be missing audio drivers

go to acer,
click on america, click on drivers & downloads, product line = notebook, product = aspire 3680... you will want to download the audio driver if using xp or the realtek hi def audio driver if using vista.

as far as the mkv support, VLC (video lan player) supports matroska pretty well, you can also download the CCCP playback pack of codecs to support mkv in pretty much any directshow player (media player, media player classic, winamp, etc)
