Your bobbin is probably too loose. When you set a new bobbin, stop every now and then and try with your fingers nail if it's nice and tight enough. Not extremely tight, but tight, not loose and moves easily when you set your finger between the threads.

With most fabrics (99%) the plate is fine at the the top position, just with very thick and "fragile" (satins etc) you might need to adjust it.

Settings: Tightest tension for the thinnest materials, more loose for the thicker ones, better have a test piece, it rarely goes under 5 anyway.

Remove the top thread from your machine.
Install a brand new needle.
ALWAYS RAISE the presser foot and then rethread the top thread--verify the thread path is correct.
Set the top tension to the midway point (starting tension setting but may need to be tweaked for your particular machine).

HINT; thread problems appearing under the fabric are usually related to a top thread issue. Thread problems appearing on the top of the fabric are usually bobbin related.

What you are experiencing is called bird nests/thread nests, or what I refer to as thread barfs. The most common fault is the top thread is not seated in the tension disk. Raising the presser foot while threading will allow the thread to seat properly.

I'm having a problem threading my brother sewing machine model XL 3010

1. Clean up any loose thread in the bobbin area.
2. Pull on the bobbin thread while it is out. It should give a tension that is equal to the top tension of three. You'll have to approximate. Adjust the screw tension on the bobbin. It is the screw nearest to the thread exit hole on the side.
3. Put it back in.
4. Now, the top tension should be at about three. If it still allows a little wad on the bottom of the fabric you can adjust the top tension by tightening a small amount and monitor each time you adjust. The wad should go away.

I have a brother xl 5500 it keeps breaking the top thread no matter what i do

Go back to your instruction manual, some available online. to Re-thread the machine completely and make sure you are threading correctly. If that's not it, you may have thread jammed in a mechanism and it needs a technician's tools to get at it properly.

The tread is breaking while sewing with brother ls 2125

The needle thread breaks
1. the needle thread is not threaded properly
2. The needle thread tension is to tight
3. The needle is bent or blunt
4. The needle is incorrectly inserted
5. The needle thread & the bobbin thread are not set under the presser foot when starting to sew
6. the threads were not drawn to the rear after sewing
7. The thread is either to heavy or to fine for the needle

The stitch tensioner doesn't seem to be working. On the highest setting it is still looping on the bottom side.

Make sure the machine is properly threaded.
The thread must go thru the tension discs and under the spring before going up to the arm that moves up and down.
If this looks OK then pull on the thread when the needle is in it's lowest position. If you don't feel resistance, then the tensioner needs to be adjusted.
This is done by loosening the screw that keeps the tensioner from rotating, and rotating it. You have to do this in away that allows the spring to move freely in the slot that captures it.
- You may want to bring it in to a shop instead.

My four-year-old XL3500 seems to have a tension problem. It was sewing fine until after I refilled the bobbin, changed thread twice, and did some zigzag stitching. Now the top stitch is not correct; it...

according to the diagram in the manual, the upper thread tension is set by the wheel/knob on top and just to the right of the thread take up lever and thread guide. If you don't have a manual, go to www.brother-usa.com they have a downloadable manual for your machine.

Thread tension for Brother XL 2230.

If you have pattern dials set correctly then I might guess that one or more sets may have been missed when the thread was being set up in the machine. most of these models show either arrows or numbers for each or way the thread needs to be routed.
