Powered-off printer makes noises

My Lexmark X5470 is plugged into a surge protector (switched on). The printer's power button is off. The printer appears to be off. The printer is not currently connected to my laptop (though the same problem happens when it is plugged into my laptop). At random intervals (sometimes minutes/sometimes hours), the printer makes a noise. It sounds like the sound a copier makes when you turn it on -- the scanner carriage thingy goes back and forth once, or there is a thump like the paper tray resetting itself, or both. Do I have a poltergeist, or is there some setting I can fix? The printer's in our guest room, so it's really annoying when it does this at night. Thanks for any help on this one! Wow... i thought i was the only one... same exact problem and yes i also did get a heart attack as well since it would wake me up during the night... but however, no luck in finding the solution.

Have you tried plugging it in without surge protector? Also, open front cover and make sure there isn't another power switch in there. Some Lexmark's have a push power button on control panel....but have an actual physical power switch on the inside of the front cover. So it may not be fully powered off. I am a Lexmark Tech, I've seen this on a few models.

SOURCE: lexmark e320 thumping on feed

Hi,
The printer may report load paper when there is enough paper present in the feeder, however this could be due to number of reasons such as if there is something which is blocking the paper to flow through the feeder anything for example, some foreign martial like a pen or a pencil, please find few steps below to fix this issue.

1. Confirm that no foreign materials are inside the machine.
2. Confirm that usable paper is set.
3. Confirm that the paper is set properly.
4. Confirm that recommended paper is used, and the number of sheets are not exciding the required number limit.
5. Adjust the paper feeder guide to the sheet size.
6. Disconnect the printer power cord as well as the printer cable form the printer.
7. Turn the printer upside down and shake the printer in order to remove any obstacle which is stuck inside the printer causing the paper jam error.
Open the printer cover and remove the cartridge and check carefully if there is any small piece of paper which is stuck inside, if so carefully remove it.
8. Disconnect the printer power cord and press and hold the power button on the printer for about 15 to 20 seconds( this will release the flee power) and reconnect the printer and check.
9. Try to rotate the wheel inside the feeder if you can reach it, to ensue that it is free enough to pull the paper.
10. Try printing with having only one sheet in the feeder and check if it does work.

Should you require any further assistance regarding the printer or even any other compute related issue please feel free to contact me I will be more than glad to assist you.

SOURCE: Printer Lexmark 2400 Forms Printer symbol issue

You may get this if you send the file in the wrong printer language language. For example, if you send a Postscript file to a PCL printer or sending graphics to a printer in text mode. Resetting the power clears the print buffer.

I am not sure if you mean you reset the power, then send the same file and it is ok? If so, check your cable first.
Is it on a parallel cable, serial, usb or network?

SOURCE: Connect Lexmark X5470 via wireless router

I would like to inform you that Lexmark X5470 is not a wireless printer. However, if you want it to use wireless then you should have a Lexmark N4050e 802.11g Wireless Print Server.

Canon pixma mg5220 will not turn on

When you have sparks it toasts the chips even a good teck will ground themselves before opening a peice of equipment like that. I'm sorry to say but I doubt very seriously if either piece of equipment will work. I would also get rid of the surge protecter and have that outlet looked at.

X5470 constantly is powering on and off

Please try the steps below:
  1. Re-brick your printer. Pull out the power supply, black box where the power cord is plugged in at the back of the printer.
  2. Disconnect the power cord from the power source. Re-connect after 30 seconds to a different known working power outlet. Bypass any power surge devices or power extensions/strips and directly plug in the cord into the power outlet in the wall.
  3. Re-plug the power supply into the printer.
  4. Press the power button if the printer won't automatically power on.
If the problem continues, please contact Lexmark Technical Support for further assistance. Thanks.

My printer no longer turns on after a storm, although I had it plugged into a surge protector. Is there a reset button or fuse on it somewhere?

Hello.
Replace the printer, unfortunately there is no internal fuse and if it has had a surge then it is destroyed!
If other items still work in the surge protector then it would be cheaper to replace the printer, if nothing works in the surge protector then it would need to be replaced.

Power will not come on. OUtlet is good.

Unplug then replug power adapter from the printer. The power adapter is the black rectangular box behind the printer where the power cord is attached. Make sure the power cord is properly secured in the power adapter. Press power button if it doesn't power on automatically. Plug printer straight to power outlet in the wall. Bypass surge devices or power strips as they tend to draw away power from the printer. If no go, try to plug it to another known working power outlet. If problem continues, contact Lexmark technical support for further assistance.

My X5470 makes a banging noise, and will not print. I put in brand new OEM cartridges, and it does not help. Is it dead?

Remove the cartridges from the printer. Close the cover. Then unplug the power adapter from the printer. The power adapter is the black box behind the printer where the power cord is attached. Wait at least 30 seconds before plugging it back in. When the printer turns back on and it's still making the banging noise, then it's a hardware issue in the printer. If not, reload the cartridges. If problem persists, it might be that encoder strip that's causing the problem. If this is the case, I strongly suggest you contact Lexmark Technical Support to further investigate the problem. Thanks.

The power button on the machine will not come on but there is power supply in the charger as indicated by the green light and it is the same in whichever socket i try.

Great job on checking the green light on the power adapter's LED. Try these steps. Bypass any surge device or power strips. Plug printer straight to the wall power outlet. Try to make sure that you are plugging the power adapter in the correct position in its slot behind the printer. Plug it hard. If it won't automatically turn on, press the power button on the printer. If this doesn't help at all, I suggest you contact Lexmark Technical Support to further investigate the problem. I hope I can assist you more on this.

My lexmark X5470 printer power button does not work.

Thank you for contacting Fixya.

Please follow the instructions given below to troubleshoot the power issue:
1. Connect the printer directly to the power outlet. Surge protectors can actually draw power away from the printer. If this fails, please try multiple power outlets to ensure your specific outlet is not damaged, and make sure the printer is not connected to the PC while testing the unit.
2. When trying to power on the printer, feel the power supply box (if there is one) and note whether or not it is warm. If it is warm, the problem is not in your power supply, but most likely in your printer. If it is cold, the power supply might be defective.
3. Ensure you have the correct power supply connected to the printer.

4. If you have access to a voltmeter, please ensure that the power supply is giving out the correct amount of voltage (most of our printers use 30 volts output).

Only displays bars when you power up`

No surge protector is going to stop a lightning strike. It's just way too powerful.
1. Make sure you've unplugged, waited 10 seconds, plugged it back in. That's more than the on/off button does.
2. If your PC will communicate with the printer at all, Lexmark has a program that will reset it. It's located here: http://support.lexmark.com/cgi-perl/knowledgebase.cgi?ccs=229:1:0:520:0:0&docid=ENUS25837

Good luck!

Printer not working at all

remove the surge protector, plug your printer direct to the wall outlet and try to power on again. try to apply a bit more pressure on the power button or try holding in down for 5 seconds, temporarily unplug the computer connection too.... if it still will not power on, try a different power cord.... if it still will not turn on with a new power cable, then check your warranty status with lexmark, this one needs to be replaced or repaired
