Have it repaired, no way around the problem for this otherwise. This is the place we recommend for the Canon Powershots: www.CamerasAndParts.com They are the best for repairing the Canons.

Your camera has an electronic view finder. To switch between the view finder and the display, you have to press the DISP. button several times and look what happens in Shooting mode and what in Playback mode. If only the display will come on, and the viewfinder stays black the camera will have a defect. If you can't use the camera anymore, because you only can shoot with the viewfinder, consider buying a new camera, because any repair will be more expensive than a new camera with the same quality.

Your camera is equipped with a optical diopter that will allow you to adjust the optics in the viewfinder to your eye. meaning bringing everything into focus as it should. The way I use this (set it) is to let the camera auto focus on a subject and then turn the diopter until I see the subject clearly.
It really helps if the subject is about 12 feet away (get it real sharp) and the camera is mounted on a tripod. Once set I put a little dot of paper white out on the diopter adjustment knob so if it gets turned I know and can quickly return it to the correct spot. I'm including a diagram where this adjustment knob is on your camera, have fun.

SOURCE: I have a canon s3 15 turn the camera on the view finder blank

I would imagine a part has broken in your camera. The best advice I can say is to get it professionally serviced and don't take it apart on your own. Many times with these products when you take them apart, more damage can be done and you'll often need parts anyway. If you go to this site: www.camerasandparts.com they just service the powershots exclusively and they are amazing for servicing these cameras. They don't charge much at all with there total service packages and your specific problem is on their site. It doesn't say what the cause is but to fix it and service the camera with shipping is $89. I can tell you from experience they are wonderful for service on these Canon cameras. Hopefully you can get it working nicely again since that is a really nice camera.

Date stamp

The date and time (and a lot more) are stored with every picture in its EXIF metadata. Any photo viewing/editing program should be able to display this data. To print this data, please consult the documentation for whatever program you're using to print your pictures. Depending on the program and printer you may print the date on the image, in the margins, or on the back.

It looks like the LCD screen is the only damage. This can be fixed at your Canon camera repairer.

My camera shows black on the screen and view finder but when I download the memory card the pictures are there?

This may seem silly, but is it possible that you're accidentally turning the camera on to camera mode rather than review mode with the lens cap on? That would explain a black screen without being able to view images on the card. Just a thought.

Can't take any photo with my Canon S3IS any more. The view finder and the screen is black when I try to take some photo but I am able to see all photo that is already on my memory card in the view finder...

Look into the lense while setting the shutter speed at a half second or so (slow enough for you to see the shutter open and close) and click the shutter release... you should see the shutter open and close. If you don't see this, then you may have a 'sticky shutter' resulting from lubricant seeping into the shutter/aperature mechanism and preventing the shutter from functioning as it should.(Common problem reported with the S2 and S3 cameras... and probably the S1 as well)

I have gotten my S3IS to take pictures by turning on the power, then opening the battery compartment door and reclosing it repeatedly until the shutter opens (from the power surge) and an image appears on the LCD.

After confirming the sticky shutter was indeed the problem, I pursued a more permanent fix.

When i look through the view finder it appears to be blurred I have cleaned outside of the lenses with the kit they supply There is no problem with the photograph quality

There's a diopter adjustment dial just to the left of the viewfinder. Turn that while looking through the viewfinder until the focus grid and the info at the bottom of the screen come into focus.

After powering up there is no image in the view finder or on the screen.I can see the menu items but can't see the object I am trying to photograph.

Think you may have accidentally hit the DISP button on the back of your camera. This manually turns the screen off and on to save batteries. Try pressing it once more to see if it corrects the problem.

Lens error, restart camera message

This is probably THE single most common failure among digital cameras. There's a halfway chance of fixing it yourself, described here: http://camerarepair.blogspot.com/2007/12/fixing-lens-error-on-digital-camera.html

Image through view finder is blury

Hey DarsCanonFix,
This camera does have a diopter adjustment on the viewfinder to correct for bad eyesight. I would try adjusting this since it could have been accidentally set incorrectly. If this doesn't work the camera might just need a good cleaning by an authorized service technician. I hope this helps!

Sincerely,
Allan
