How to restore and then update dell 8300

I have ran a total restore on my 8300, deleting the partition, and starting from beginning. it ends with windowsXP and IE6. I use the drivers disc to complete the repairs. At this point I want to update windows and IE but nothing I try seems to work. I downloaded IE8 on a thumb drive and tried to install but after supposed installation it won't work properly....keeps having to shut down. windows will not update either? It wants a browser update first. Please advise me of which steps to take first and how to solve this.

Usually, after you re-install ... and set UPDATE mode (for Windows & IE) to automatic ... the system will look for and download updates (to Windows, browsers, etc.) automatically. So, shut down and restart ... and let it do it's (automatic) download & install . It may take quite a while, to bring you up to the latest Windows XP version.

SOURCE: WIndows XP won't install/ recognise new hardware

Ok firstly can you see the DVD drive in BIOS or any USB Devices Within Bios ?

If yes , we have just solved your problem to both your USB and DVD Drive problems , it being windows , it is failing to communicate device anomalies and is failing to handle device operations.

If the answer was no , you most probably have a faulty motherboard and the problem in question is most likley the south bridge , this is responsible for handling plugged in devices , IDE devicesUSB controller etc.. and communicating with the CPU

On another note in windows you could try one of two things:

1. Completly remove existing drivers , including the chipset and USB control drivers and reinstalling them , then rebooting and trying it all again

or

2. Reinstall the Windows OS and test your devices once more

I Hope this will solve your issues

Thanks , and please dont forget to rate :D

SOURCE: Having Trouble Reinstalling XP on my Dell Dimension 3000

Is the "New" HD in the system presently? If not install it. Boot from the original XP Restore disk (CD/DVD). When you get Windows going (from CD) go to COMPUTER and format your C: drive. Once this is done go ahead and run the Restore from the original XP disk. All other files (the **** you mentioned) will be gone, once and for all.

Factory reset

jeremy,
To restore your system to factory conditions you can start the computer and tap the F8 key. Once you have the advanced options on the screen choose the one that reads "Repair Your Computer" and follow the prompts to restore the system.
CAUTION:
This utility formats the operating system hard drive partition prior to restoring the factory image. This means data on that partition is deleted and cannot be recovered.
If the customer creates a second partition with a third-party utility, Dell Factory Image Restore is not affected as long as the image partition is not removed.

RESTORE TO FACTORY SETTINGS OR GERT AND EXTERNAL CD/RW USE THE FACTORY CDS
Many years ago, Dell started shipping computers with a small Dell Utility partition hidden at the front of the hard disk, followed by the main (Windows operating system) partition. Beginning around July 2004, select Dell computers in the Dimension and Inspiron model lines began shipping with a third partition hidden at the end of the hard disk. This third partition contains the "Dell PC Restore by Symantec" utility--colloquially referred to as DSR ("Dell System Restore"). This is a utility that can be used to return a computer to its "as shipped" state, with the XP operating system restored to the condition it was in when the user first unpacked the computer from the box. Pressing the right keys when the computer is starting up will boot this DSR partition.

Can you please give me step by step insturctions on how to totally wipe my hardrive on my dell latitude 600? Then I will refoat it back to its orignal settings. thank You

Unless you're donating the drive, there's no need to do anything before re-installing the OS. When Windows asks where you want to install the OS to, you'll see an option for formatting the drive first.
If you are donating it and are worried about someone recovering the data (after formatting and re-installing, it's not something the average tech can do) I'd recommend booting the laptop off CD/USB drive with this image (http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/) and running one of the Hard Disk Wiping utilities. Mind you, some of the very thorough ones (military-grade) can take DAYS.

Deleted the software for the volume on my b120 inspiron...please help restore this

unfortunately when you delete the volume you delete necessary files for your restore partition that are located at the end of the c: Drive. It is never advised to wipe a C: Drive if you plan on using the DSR partition of your dell. You can try to see if restore will come up but I doubt it. Tap your F8 button when your computer starts a few times, if you get a windows screen that has the option to Repair My Computer then select it and go to the very bottom choice after that to select the last option which is Dell Restore Image. In the event that choice is not there you got some problems. Or if you can not even get to this Restore Screen or Diagnostic Screen after the F8 you got problems. The only other way to get up and running is to contact Dell and order some restore discs. Then load from there. They are available for chat online at dell.com. Just make sure you are the original owner or at least have the information for the registered owner of the unit. Otherwise they will not help you.

Good Luck!
