Hi, Change the controls back to normal settings. Make sure the freezer is getting 0 to 5 above. If the freezer is getting cold enough, try and turn the cold control to 1 and see if the refrigerator shuts off. It sounds like the cold control in not working properly and will need to be replaced. NOTE: The freezer temp has to be right temp or the fresh food side will not work proper.
I hope this helps. Please let me know if I can assist you further.

I have a GE side by side and the freezer is not working. Not freezing food.

Hello,

The first thing I would do is to check the compressor and the condenser fan. Remove the cover on the back of the fridge and check how hot is the compressor? Is the condenser fan turning well? Also check the condenser coil under the fridge, it is very possible it needs cleaning.
If the condenser fan is not working properly then it has to be replaced.
If the condenser fan motor is fine and the cleaning did not help then the sealed system is low on Freon and in such case you need a certified technician to fix a leak and to charge the system.
Good luck in solving the problem.....

My fridge keeps freezing my food

The fridge gets its cold air from the freezer through a vent(damper) between the freezer and fridge. The fan in the freezer blows air through it. Make sure this fan is running. You may have to hold the door switch in for it to run. There is a flap you adjust with the fridge temp. control. Make sure it's opening and closing when you adjust the fridge temp.
The problem could be the electronic control if you have one or the mechanical linkages.

The coils below fridge need cleaning very badly ( if G E then behind fridge) or the fan behind refrig which cools the compressor , is not working . Model number would have been helpful .

GE clean steel side by side not freezing ice. See

Unplug the fridge and pull away from wall. There is a panel on back that has a control board. Look on both sides for burn marks or loose welds. Also remove bottom paper panel on back and lets see if compressor is running. Let me know what you find, Sea Breeze

Freezer is cool but not freezing or making ice - fridge not cold

If there is frost on the back wall of the freezer, then the compressor is running. Another (maybe) good thing is the fan is running.

The problem could be -

1) Bad defrost heater
2) Failed defrost sensor
3) Failed defrost timer or refrigerator controller board.

There are diagnostic tests to determine the problem, but require skill at using a multimeter and possibly reading a schematic/wiring diagram.

You can temporarily make the refrigerator run again for awhile by unplugging, opening the doors, and defrosting for 6-8 hours (store food in coolers.). Then plug it back in. Note, water may come out of the freezer as a result of defrosted ice.
