Running bios/boot menu through external monitor

I need to re-install Windows 7 by boot menu because i don't know Windows password. The screen is broken and i'm using an external monitor. I need to know the key sequence to run setup from boot menu or the key sequence (if there is one) to enable external monitor on BIOS/Boot menu (tried fn-f4; ctrl-F; f2 to enter bios plus f9 to restore settings plus f10 to save and it didn't work). Tks in advance.

I have a Dell 1525 Inspiron laptop. All of a sudden it DOES boot up, (I can hear the HDD) the LCD display looks lit up, but NO DISPLAY either of boot up or windows. I hooked up an external monitor an

It sounds like your LCD might be bad. The fact that you can see the display on an external monitor tells you that your video card on the motherboard is ok. Is it booting all the way into windows so that you can see the desktop on the external monitor? Take a flash light and look real hard at the LCD on the laptop. Sometimes you might be able to faintly see the same thing you are seeing on the external monitor. If you can faintly see the icons or desktop that means your LCD Inverter is bad. If you see nothing, you screen probably needs to be replaced. I would find another repairman because you don't need to know anything about the bios to replace the lcd monitor. Look on ebay and type in "Dell Inspiron 1525 LCD Screen" . Set the options to "Buy It Now" so that you can only see the items you can buy and not bid on. Also set the Sort By to: "Price + Shipping Lowest First". The first thing you will see are LCD Inverters that can be purchased new for under $10, then you will see used LCD Screens from $50 - $75. A new LCD Screen for your system can be purchased as low as $86.69. Also notice that it shows that the screen will not only fit your dell inspiron 1525, but also the 1501, 1505, 1520 and 1526, so once again it sounds like you need to boot the repairman that says you need to know the bios number. If you need a good hones repairman try: http://www.generalsystemsconsulting.com They will fix it and ship it back to you for less than any quote you get including the shipping. I had a friend that got a quote from HP of almost $400 to replace the screen, they did it for $155

1 Remove any floppy disks or bootable CDs, DVDs, USB flash drives or other bootable media from the computer. Attempt to restart the computer again. Proceed if you continue to receive the error.
2 Restart the computer again. Press the key required to enter your BIOS setup. (The monitor usually displays a "Press [key] to access BIOS" right after restarting your computer. Press the key shown on your screen.)
3 Navigate to the "Boot Options" or "Advanced" menu by using the arrow keys. (The precise menu terms will vary according to your computer and BIOS type.)
4 Select the hard disk that contains your operating system (usually C:) as your primary boot device. Select your CD/DVD drive, your floppy drive or another hard disk as your secondary boot device.
5 Save and exit the BIOS. Proceed with the next step if you see the "Non-system disk error" message again.
6 Restart the computer. Return to the BIOS' "Boot Options" screen by following the steps above, then set the "CD/DVD drive" as the primary boot device and the hard disk as the secondary boot device. Save and exit the BIOS.
7 Insert your Windows installation disc. Restart the computer. Press any key to boot from disc. Follow the on-screen prompts to reinstall Windows.
8 Replace your hard disk drive if you cannot install Windows.

Just got a Maxtor MaxAttach 4300 used and need to reset to factory...

Since no one has posted on this I?ll give you my best guess. Disclaimer, I don?t have one of these, Maxtor is now owned by Seagate, they have discontinued support and I can?t find a manual. Having said all of that from what I?ve read this runs Windows 2000 server and allows you to physically connect a keyboard, mouse and monitor to it. I would try connecting these external devices to the box, boot up and try logging in. If you literally don?t know ANY of the passwords you can try booting the system with a utility tool that will find and remove the administrator password. There are several of them readily available (usually Linux based) available for free, here is the link for one: http://home.eunet.no/%7Epnordahl/ntpasswd/. That will allow you to log into the operating system and configure it as you wish. Be aware that this is not supported by Microsoft and could wind up corrupting the operating system. At that point the only option would be to rebuild the server software from scratch. Good luck and let us know how it goes or if you have any other questions.
