In older pc's and laptops the mini-jack fits, as it should, perfectly. on the new hp pavillion the input-hole seems empty. teh sound is given through to the headphones but sometimes it's simultaneously on the laptop speakers. other times, because of the big hole, it's not connecting.
No PC stated. what new Pavillion, must be guess that>
here I will answer for both classes of PC.
my wild guess, not seeing the PC.
you need the 2.5mm to 3.5 mm adapter. tiny to big.
you have the wrong ear phones , that dont fit PCs.
here it is,....
the also so the other way too. 3.5 to 2.5mm
https://www.bgmicro.com/AUD1107.aspx
as PC's get thinner,, the makers must go to the smaller 2.5mm jacks, or they cant do it.
no PC posted, why do that? 1985 to 2018
HP has vast 1000s of PC now. endless list really.

SOURCE: NO SOUND ON MY TOSHIBA LAPTOP
Hi,
You can try a system restore, ie you can take back your computer to a date when it was working fine .
Running system restore in windows Xp:
Start >All Programs> Accessories >System Tools >System restore
Running system restore in Vista
Start> write "system restore in start search bar "> click system restore
If the system restore doesnot work , try uinstalling the sound drivers from the add remove programs and install the new ones from the link below

SOURCE: sound is working but internal speaker is not working
Connecting headphones to the system will disabled the internal speakers until the headphone jack is disconnected, at which such time the internal speakers should function again.
If you disconnect the headphones and the internal speakers are not re-activated, then there may be damaged to the microswitch in the jack. (Try rebooting after the headphones are disconnected too)
SOURCE: No audio output to tv on my dell 1545
That, & most, earphone sockets, simply doesn't have enough "Current" or signal voltage to drive your TV set's audio in Amplifier. You need to get a Pre-Amp, to amplify the signal, up to a level that can be used by the TV. So you need to purchase, or build from a kit, a small stereo pre-amp and insert it between your laptop & TV audio In.
