Rewinding while playing (usually it's called "review") is different from regular fast rewind. The machine drives the tape differently. This is usually done with a gear, but older machines used rubber belts or drive wheels. As the rubber wears out they slip against the parts they are supposed to drive and the tape doesn't move. If I remember correctly most Emersons had one rubber wheel called an idler that caused this trouble.

If you'd like to try repairing the machine yourself, try a Google search for your particular model and "won't rewind". There are a number of parts sites and forums that may have detailed information about what needs to be replaced and where on your model.

If you don't feel up to doing this yourself, you might want to consider replacing the machine rather than paying for repair. At today's labor rates - assuming you can find a shop that even still takes VCRs for repair - a new combo VCR/DVD machine might be only a few dollars more than the cost of repairing your current VCR.

How do I get fast forward & rewinds to work on my Teac W450-R dual cassette deck..?

Check the belts, inside the unit you should see a rubber belt which is what pulls the tape fast forward or rewind. Some belts with time get loose and slip, they can also break and fall off which will not let you fast forward or rewind.
Open your cassette player and look where the plastic pulleys are located and check for the belts, they might not be broken at all but very loose and slip on the plastic pulley.

Panasonic RR-930 does not backspace with or without pedal. It engages the mechanism but appears stuck when tape is inserted. Runs fine without tape in deck.

The ancient tape is junk. Buy a new one. You might also try slamming the old tape against a wall or desk to loosen up the tape layers. Then FF and RW all the way.

I have a Sherwood DS1150 tape Deck. Problem Cant open Cassette Door, tape is inside . Will not rewind or fast forward. Wont play. Any advise

Very likely the tape is wound around the capstan.

You may have to get at it by taking the unit's case off.

If I am right you might have to destroy the cassette unless you are very careful. Or, at least, have to cut the tape so as to unwind it from the capstan.

You could also try to open the door just enough to lift it up and off ... as if you were going to clean the tape heads.

The dictaphone wont rewind or fast forward and makes a bleeping noise

Hi,
Does the tape move when you press rewind or fast forward.
If the tape moves for a few seconds then bleeps it sound like a sensor problem.
If it only bleeps when the rewind and fast forward are pressed and the play is ok it sounds like the actuator motor is faulty, this motor enables the rewind and fast forward.
Hope this helps.

VHS tape was playing . After stoping does not play. Other tape will play

The idler wheel (that only drives the tape in play or scan modes) is slipping too much (very common problem). Try verify this by putting the tape in play then immediately press the fast fwd or rewind buttons to scan the tape. On older machines, the idlers used rubber friction tires - on newer ones, a clutch. Either replace the tire or increase the spring tension on the clutch.
Hope Ya Fix It.
