The unit is in protect mode because a problem was deteected in the final output stage of the amplifier. The pop in the speakers is a god indication that there is DC current in the output stage. This is not a good thing. This is a relatively common failure of all receivers and can easily be fixed by any shop that does audio repair. Expect a parts cost in teh $30-$40 range.

MHC-RV777D shuts off itself because of protection mode that is activated to avoid further damage due to defective amplifier output IC in unit.
You need to check/ replace output amplifier IC to solve this issue, if you are not familiar with electronics stuff repair then local repair shop will do this job for you.
