If your pump is blocked in any way (usually a closed valve), then the pump cannot keep water flowing. It could be starved of water if blocked on the suction side, or an air leak. On the return side, it's usually a ``dead head`` pipe, or a closed outlet valve. In either case, the pump can overheat and actually boil the water within it. In that case, the fittings attached to it can deform and cause bigger air leaks, which compounds the problem. If you replace the fittings, reconnect the pipe and remove any blockages, you should be fine.
