If you remove the screws holding the handle pieces together you can separate them and remove the actuator and put the new one in the same place, then put the handle back together.
To replace a mini-emptor it should come of with a twisting motion. You may have to snap it if it is broken, and be aware in the exhaust port a piece may be left behind that you will have to remove to get the new mini-emptor to attach. There are 3 rivets that this part holds onto and when it is removed you should see the rubber and the 3 rivets. You can see pictures here: Kirby G4 miniemptor instructions.
There is no need to remove the outer bag. The fill tube can be removed by cutting it off near the bottom and pulling on the support wire to unwind it from the neck on the mini-emptor. I usually hose down the bag and slosh it around in my laundry sink to clean it. After it dries, the new fill tube can be screwed onto the mini-emptor. You can wet the bottom of the tube with plain water to make it go on more easily. If you screw it on firmly, there is no need for cable ties at the bottom. Re-attach the top adaptor ( bag holder ), and secure it with cable ties.
Taping usually just causes a mess. The mini-emptor has coarse threads on it that the fill tube screws on to. Occasionally there is a cable tie on the bottom which is not really necessary. If you cut the tube near the bottom, you can get hold of it's wire frame and rip it out. After cleaning the threaded area on the mini-emptor, wet one end of the new fill tube with water and screw it well down. The bag top adapter can then be put on and secured with cable ties.
I have exactly the same problem. I plan to drill a hole in the handle through plastic and metal, and then pass a metal pin to hold them together. I don't rotate the handle much, so the loss of handle spin functionality will not be a major issue for me.

Posted by smcgee on June 30, 2008I've got a Kirby G4 and I need to replace the emptor assembly. Do you know how to change it? Hello, I would advise you to ALWAYS to FIRST UNPLUG YOUR VACUUM before beginning any service procedure. The Kirby mini emptor assm can be replaced by going inside of the cloth bag and looking for the ty tie that is hold it onto the clothe outer bag and cut the ty tie to release the mini emptor on the Kirby. The bag @ the bottom has elastic around the bottom and should come right off; it will be tight but should come off. The front of the mini emptor has a gasket so make sure the new one has the same small gasket also, and that will just turn and unhook. You need to find a new ty tie just as long as the one you are removing; either from a local vacuum cleaner store, the Kirby Factory Cust serv (Parts) or try the Home Depot or Menards or a box store similar to those. So if you need further assistance, please feel free to contact your local vacuum cleaner dealer in your area or in the yellow pages, or contact the factory phone number or website to further assist you with your questions. http://kirby.com/Customer Service – U.
