I am trying to use dban and need to boot from the cd or usb. The dell won't do this even though I've put the cd/usb first in the start up sequence. When I try to force it to start from the cd/usn (using f12) an error comes back saying "selected boot device not available". Any ideas on how to get the cd/usb to bot first?

Turn the computer's power on.
Immediately put the original Windows XP CD into the drive.
Tell the computer to boot from the CD (not from the hard-drive).
Does it start to boot from the CD?
Do you get as far as the "repair/install" boot-screen?
If so, your basic hardware is OK, and turn your computer off,
rather than choosing "repair" or "install".
Then, it's probably either the hard-drive that is failing,
or the installed copy of Windows XP is fuddle-duddle-ucked up, so that it cannot finish the "Windows startup" processing.

I had the same issue with my dell dimension 2400. The issue I was having resulted in the connection to the drive was loose. Try taking off the side of the case, find the drives in question and reseating the plugins. My pc was quite a bit older though and i don't know if this will be your solution, but its worth a shot. You can even try installing a different cable and swapping to another power supply plug.

Hello,
Could the boot record on the CD be damaged? Try it on another computer to find out. As the live CD loads the program in RAM, you need to see if your system has enough RAM (It depends on the minimum amount of RAM required to run the particular Linux Distribution)
By the way if you are interested in installing Linux inside Windows XP without creating a separate partition, Ubuntu offers this.
Hope it helps.
