Verbatim External Hard Drive shuts off

I have an external Verbatim Hard Drive that connects to my USB port and gets it's power via the USB. Once connected it has worked fine, but it doesn't always connect. When my computer goes into sleep mode, it will not restart when the computer comes out of sleep mode. I have to unplug it and then re-plug it in, and even then it doesn't always connect. Sometimes the blue light (which stays on steadily when it's working) just blinks and the computer never seems to recognize it. So I have to just keep unplugging it and then plugging it back in until the blue light finally stays on (& then the computer recognizes it). It also doesn't always turn back on when I restart the system. I've only had it for 6 months so I am wondering if it's faulty equipment??

SOURCE: new verbatim 160gb usb external

I had a simliar problem. This is how I fixed it in XP;

Remove any attached external devices except the one having the
problem.

Go to:
1. Control Panel
2. Administative Tools
3. Computer Management
4. Under Storage right click on "Disk Mangement"
5. The bad drive should show up as Disk 1 with a black bar across
the top.
6. Right click on the bar.
7.Select " change drive letter and paths " and follow the instructions.
8. If number 7 does not work, go back to the menu and select
"Format". During the FORMAT I believe you will be asked to assign
a drive letter.
9. GOOD LUCK

I acutally had this problem with two different drives. I fixed the first one using the instructions above. But the second drive didn't even show up in Disk Management. I had to return it for a new one.

SOURCE: This external drive isn't recognized by any of my computers. HELP

If it is not showing up on any computers there's most likely a hardware problem in the drive or AC adapter. Do the lights come on when you plug the power in? If not you need a new adapter, if they do the failure is either in the drive caddy circuitry or in the drive circuitry. You can take it to your local PC shop and have the techs test the HDD in a new caddy, if it works in the new caddy your done, if it doesn't you may need the help of a pro to recover your files off of the drive. Hope this helps FixYa, if you need additional assistance or a referal to a pro comment back here with questions or your country and city. Chris

My verbatim model#53018 1TB does not respond after it is connected to my PC

Go to the Disk management service and check if the drive shows up there. The route will depend on your OS. In Windows 7, click Start > Control Panel > System and Security. Go down to the Administrative Tools and click Create and format hard drive partitions.

Look at the lower half of the window and scroll down to see all identified disks. If your external drive is listed, something got corrupted in the NTFS or FAT record. Use a third-party drive repair tool before reformatting the drive (which will delete any information on the drive). If your external drive isn't listed here, try connecting it to a different USB port. Make sure that your USB ports are providing enough power to the hard drive. (Some USB ports can be disabled for power savings/security.) If you are using a laptop, try plugging in your AC adapter/charger. If you are using a USB hub, try a direct connection to the computer (or use a powered hub).

If you are still not seeing the drive listed, there is a problem with the connections inside the external drive. Either the wiring between the drive and the controller has come loose, the USB connection to the controller is damaged or the drive failed.

If the drive is out of warranty, you can try opening the case and using a different enclosure (2.5" or USB/IDE/SATA adapter). If you have a desktop with a free SATA controller, you could try putting the drive in your system. If the disk works with another controller, the enclosure was bad.

I hope this helps.

I've just bought a 250GB Verbatim Portable Hard Drive (silver, 47628). When I plug it in, the blue light flashes, the disk happily murmurs, but it is never recognized by any of my computers (win XP and 7)....

Hi,

Even though it is possible that your USB hard drive is corrupt, but

before you finally conclude, try out these few troubleshooting

steps.

First of all, it is possible that the USB port that you are using is a

USB 1.0 port, which has a lower voltage not enough to

power on your Storage drive.

In this case, there are two things you can do,

1. Change the USB port you are using for the storage drive to a

USB 2.0 one (Just keep Checking all the ports one by one in case

you dont know which one it is).

2. If your Storage drive has external power facility, just plug it in

an external power first, before connecting it to the system.

If there are no USB 2.0 Ports on your system at all,

then just go to any electronic store and tell them you want to buy

a USB 2.0 Expansion card.

and if it is a laptop, A USB 2.0 PCMCIA card.

Install it on your system, and connect your external drive through it.

Meanwhile, before you try out the second option, test the drive on

a friend's system, that you are sure has a very good system, with

USB 2.0 port.

If after trying out all these, the USB Drive still doesn't work, then

I'm afraid, the drive might have been bad/spoilt.

Kindly keep me posted about the problem and let me know how it

goes

Hope this helps you out.

Thank you for using Fixya

How to use verbatim model # usb500

Plug it in one of the usb ports of your computer. Check if the external hard drive has a power button.
Normally, something will pop up on the screen asking you to install the software that came with it.

Follow the instructions and you may now use the external drive as your back up drive.

Did the 1000gb external hd come with instructions?
Did you read them?
Did you Install The Software for this Device?

If not. Try plugging it in all the usb ports.
Try shutting down the PC, when it's off plug in the 1000gb external HD,
Restart the Computer, If Windows still dosen't recognize it, then it's most likely defective, and should be returned. Try purchasing a higher quality brand.

External hard drive doesn't respond

Shut your computer down. Disconnect you external hardrive. Power up your computer again. Power up the Verbatim and then connect to a USB port. You should hear a very quiet 'ping'.

Go to My Computer, and the Verbatim should be showing as one of your drives (probably Drive D). You should be able to open it from there.

Make sure that you have a Desk Top Icon for opening the hardrive, it makes it so much easier. Hope this helps
