if you have laptop/desktop computer you can sync the iPad with iTunes and download iOS 8.1.2 there:

3. Download and Install the Update
Go to iTunes -> Select iPad -> Check for Update -> Click Download and Update

Whichever method you choose, the process will take quite some time to work depending on how much free storage you have on your iPad, your internet connection, and how Apple's servers are doing with upgrades. The iPad's touch screen should always work, unless it froze. Try and restart the iPad (hold down the button on the top edge, close to the camera lens until the iPad turns itself off, normally a few seconds). If it doesn't work after a restart, you may need to reinstall the system, which you can do from iTunes (attach the iPad to your computer, open iTunes and choose 'Restore iPad' - you need internet connection to download new system). Have iTunes back up your iPad before restoring it, if possible, or data will be lost.

It does work on the iPad 2 and over, maybe not on the original iPad. Try reinstalling it and see if Game Center is on.
