How do I separate a Jacuzzi motor from the pump? I removed the round locking ring but I can't pull motor away from the pump.

I have had Northstar pumps apart but it has been a while. I found a narrative written by another expert, macdirk, describing how to replace the motor and here it is.

In order to remove the motor, first turn the motor locking ring. This holds the too halves of the pump together. There should be a small tab you have to press in, then grab the round handle, and spin the outer sleeve to unlock. Once you do this the back half of the can be pulled away. This can be very hard sometimes. If the pump and motor still work, you can flip the switch on for a sec or two, and it will pop the back half away from the front half. If the motor is not working then you'll just have to twist, wiggle and pull till you get it apart. After this make sure the power is off, breaker off, etc. and you can remove two screw from the plastic cover on the tail of the motor and disconnect the wires, and remove that half the pump. Next step is to just pull off the diffuser, which may actually have stuck inside the front half the pump. Next remove the impeller, by unscrewing while locking the shaft from the rear with a wrench. if there is a screw in the center of the impeller threaded into motor shaft remove that first. This should be a left handed thread, so unscrew by turning clockwise. The impeller should unscrew counter clockwise like normal. Next remove the seal plate. That should expose 4 bolts holding the motor to the motor mounting plate. Once you remove this you can remove the old seal, clean, and install new seal. you should replace the diffuser and seal plate o-ring as well. Normally I don't recommend a lot of lube on o-rings, but this one can be a ****** to get back together, so use plenty of lube. As I said getting the back half inserted back into the front half is a pain, so you'll just have to work it. Make sure the motor locking ring is forward of the mounting brace that sits on the ground. This can be hard, but if you get it at the right angle it will go raight in place. Make sure the diffeser and/or diffuser o-ring does not slip off into the pump housing when your trying to get it lined up and back into place. There is a notch in the housing and seal plate that have to line up. Sometimes a clamp or ratcheting strap can be used to help pop the two halves back together.
Now all that being said.... it might be worth it to just take the whole pump in to a pump repair shop and let them rebuild it, or put a new motor and seals for ya. At least check the price and consider it. This pump has unions to install it so there is no pipe work required to remove the whole darn thing. Good Luck, and let me know if you have more questions.

Turn off the power at the breaker, then reach in to the impeller and see if it will turn freely. If it does you probably only need to replace the capacitor. If it will not turn freely you'll have to remove the motor end by unscrewing the large ring that holds the motor to the wet end. Remove the small screws that hold the diffuser cover and inspect the impeller and impeller ring, sometimes known as an impeller weir or floating eye seal.
Even if you have to replace the motor this pump is worth saving if there is no damage to other components. Note: Replacement motors are easy to find, I favor Magnatek / A. O. Smith motors but any brand such as Emerson or other will do. Jacuzzi parts though are getting increasingly hard to come about.

When you go to loosten the lock ring you will need to find the lock tab that will keep it from comming off. This tab I think will pull out but it may push in and this will free the ring to turn. Once this is off if the motor runs turn it on for a second and let it push the front and back half apart. If it won't run you can use a flush bag to pressure it off. In worst case you can pry the halvs apart with a big screwdriver. If you do this be careful not to hurt the case of the pump it is just plastic.
When the pump is opener you remove the difusser and look inside the impeller. If you have a screw in the center of the impeller it will be a left hand thread so to remove you will turn it clockwise. Now just unscrew the impeller turning it counter clockwise and take the rear plate off the motor by removing the four bolts on the back. Good luck.

That is an old sealed Jacuzzi pump that can not be repaired. It is one of many reasons why Jacuzzi never did well in the pump business and has gone from owner to owner over the years. Unfortunately your pump is not repairable without destroying it in the process.

If yours is the model with the big round ring around motor, it is a large retaining nut. Remove this nut and the motor should come from the pump housing. Don't be too rough, plastic breaks.

The impeller is threaded onto the end of the motor shaft and the housing (pump body) is attached to the motor with the same bolts that hold the rear cover on the motor they run all the way through on most pumps.

Based on the limited info. For most jacuzzi pumps, you will need to remove the lock ring and pull the pump apart to expose the impeller/diffuser. Next, remove the diffuser to expose the impeller. Depending on what type of motor you have, either remove the cover plate or cover cap to expose the shaft at the rear of the motor. There are three types of shafts, one is slotted so you will need a large screwdriver to hold it in place. One is larger and can be held with a wrench or special shaft tool. One is more internal and has a switch at the end so it has to be held with a 7/16 wrench under the switch midway between the switch and the housing. You may have to remove the capacitor to gain access with the wrench.
There may be a lock screw holding the impeller to the shaft, if so, remove it by turning it clockwise (left hand threads). Then you can remove the impeller by turning it counter-clockwise. They can get stuck on the threads and you may need an impeller wrench or something suitable to give you some mechanical advantage to remove it.

This could be anything from a stuck impeller to bad windings in motor. If you open the pump at the lock ring and remove the difusser from the impeller you can see if you can spin the impeller, If it won't move is it something holding the impeller up remove it. If notit is probally a bad bearing and you should replace the motor. If the Impeller turns try turning it on and caerfully try to spin before it kicks the breaker. If it is sort of stuck and does not want to turn the motor is bad and needs to be replaced. If it spins and won't start same thing, If it spins and starts it is probally a start capicator. Shut the power off at the breaker remove the back of the motor the capacitor will be a small black or silver cylinder with 2 or 3 wires clipped to it. Remove this and take it to a motor shop and get an exact duplicate. and that should fix it. When putting back together be sure to lube all "O"rings and refill with water. Hope this helps.
