I purchased a GE Spacemaker over-the-range microwave, model JVM1540 at Lowe's. If I had a charcoal filter that came with the microwave, it would be easy to find the right replacement charcoal filter; but it didn't come with one. The microwave is non-vented, by the way. The JX81A charcoal filter (which is what Lowe's told me to purchase) doesn't seem to fit. Apparently, there's also a JX81C, and JX81D charcoal filter out there, but I don't just randomly want to purchase air filters. Help!
It's Part No. WB06X10359.
The oem part is a charcoal filter in a metal casing. The size of the opening is 135x160mm, but the filter has to be smaller than this because of the thickness of the rigid metal casing. Filters you buy online may fit somewhat correctly, but are not likely to fit precisely. However, if you buy carbon filter media, such as the Honeywell 38002 carbon pre-filter or equivalent, you can use scissors to cut a 135mmx160mm piece that will fit precisely in the filter slot.
To access the filter, depending on the exact model, you remove screws on top of the microwave, then open the microwave door, and remove the plastic vent cover that extends across the length of the microwave at the top. In my case, there are three screws, and once they are removed, the plastic piece needs to be slid a very short distance to the left then pulled straight out from the microwave.
If you have cut a piece of filter as I suggest, you can fully insert the back of the filter into place, then bend the filter slightly so that you can drop the front of the filter behind the plastic tabs at the front. Note that the filter fits at a diagonal from top back to bottom front.
Drop the plastic cover back in place behind the open door, then insert, offset slightly to the left from microwave. When fully inserted, slide to right so that sides of cover are flush with microwave sides. Replace the three screws.
This is for JVM1540DP1(BB) where BB is color. Some JVM1540 models have four screws on top...
