SOURCE: How to do a complete factory reset of a Sony Bravia KDL-32P3000
Just talked with Sony Support today.
It seems that Sony in Denmark had sent out new software updates (over DVB-T) but also some wrong TV's got updated as well. This caused my DVB-T tuner to not function anymore so I wanted to try a factory reset and it fixed my problem.
So I was instructed on how to do this. I have a Sony Bravia KDL-32P3000 (which should be similar to the U3000 and S3000 as well).
This is how to do a factory reset of your Sony Bravia KDL-32 P/U/S-3000 TV.
PLEASE BE VERY CAREFUL WITH THE SERVICE MENU, YOU CAN EASILY CAUSE YOUR TV TO MAL-FUNCTION!!!! IF YOU FOLLOW THIS GUIDE IT IS AT YOUR OWN RISK!!!
Set your TV in standy (use the green power butten on your remote), RED standby LED is ON on your TV.
Now press these buttons in this order on your remote (pointing to the TV).
i+
5
VOL UP (+)
GREEN POWER button
NOW BE CAREFUL! Dont press any keys just for the fun of it!!! IT MAY DESTROY YOUR TV.
You should now be in the service menu. It will show up as some green letter/numbers spread over the screen (mine are a bit hard to see/a bit faded). In the upper right corner you should have 2 letters TT (two t's).
Now carefully press key 0 and then key 8 on your remote (they should be shown on the screen after the two TT).
Now wait a little while (more than 10 seconds) and your TV should reset with factory settings, just as if you had just brought it home from the TV store.
Best wishes,
Mads

Problems relating to the automatic turn on and turn off of a set like this usually point to the main board being an issue. For this set, I believe Sony refers to that board as the "AU" board.
It's probably not the G/Power Supply board, especially if it turns itself on. Power supplies will turn a set off, but rarely--rarely--turn itself on.
If there's no kind of extended warranty involved here,
you could be looking at $500.00 for parts and labor to repair this kind of problem.
As always, try any software/firmware updates Sony might have available on their website prior to pursuing a repair visit.
SOURCE: How easy is it to repair a POWER FAILURE TO SONY
Hello,
Usually it takes a little knowledge of basic electronics and some soldering skills. If you have these, then it never hurts to try to fix it yourself. Its already not working. Just make sure to work safe, unplug before working on it and close up before turning on. If you think its a power supply you might be able to see some blown capacitors, or you might get lucky and find a blown fuse inside.
Hope this helps

The fact that the screen illuminates properly and does not stay absolutely pitch black means that the backlights are working properly.
A faulty LCD Controller Board (or TCon board for short) could possibly cause the symptoms you describe. A replacement board can be purchased on Ebay for around $60 plus shipping. See the following link for one example:
http://cgi.ebay.com/SONY-KDL-32S3000-T315XW02-T260XW02-CONTROLLER-BOARD-/220731395519?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item33649dcdbf
However, if you are unable / unwilling to disassemble the unit and replace the component yourself, then you will seriously have to consider the cost benefit of risking more money trying to repair the unit. Sony products are generally pretty reliable and worth the effort of repairing, but a technician in the repair shop will probably charge you at least $100 just for the labour to replace the part, plus the cost of the part itself. I don't know how comfortable you are with repairing electronics since you said you had the power supply board replaced by someone else. You will have to weigh this cost against the price of a brand new TV which comes complete with a warranty.
