The interior lights work when turned to the on position. They also work when the other 3 doors are opened. They do not come on when the driver door is opened. Can anyone provide info. on why this would occur and how to fix it?
If I am remembering correctly, the switch is part of the latch. Each door has its own switch to turn on the interior light, and it sounds like the switch in the driver's door latch is either stuck or junk. If it has to be replaced it is very simple to remove for those that know how, but a nightmare for those that don't. The exterior handle has to be removed to release the pull-cord to the latch, interior trim panel and vapor barrier has to come off. Electrical harness, lock rod, interior handle rod, all have to be removed. Now the latch. Then it all has to go back together, and most importantly, it all has to work. I'm not saying it's not possible. I'm saying that it can ruin your day and your wallet if something goes wrong.
Testimonial: "Many thanks for the help! I noticed the lights seem to work when the door is unlocked manually with the key. If I use the electronic key faub, they do not work when the driver door is opened. This does seem to be an issue with the switch. :("
Check the light switch at the base of the door as it may be stuck in the closed position and not making the circuit when the door is opened.
Testimonial: "I checked the door but do not see a switch at the base. Do I need to have the panel off to check. Otherwise, can you help with a description of where this switch at the base of the door is?? Thanks!"

Do you have electric locks in the vehicle? One test to do is turn on the car's headlights and open the door. You should hear a chime when you open the driver door. One other thing is to unlock the doors with the remote if you have a remote open the driver door, get in the car but don't put the key in the ignition. The doors might relock after 15-20 seconds. This proves that the door signal open is not being processed. Just tell me what model VW and what year and if you have electric locks and I'll help you.

you have a bad drivers door latch, the micro switch inside is not telling the computer that the latch has been opened which would normally mean the door is open.

The sensor/ switch on the door jam is faulty. It is possibly just dirty, or stuck, or a wire has broken.

There's a switch that's usually located around the door hinges; you should be able to see it if the door is open. Sounds like the switch is bad, and isn't completing the circuit when you open the one door. Open the door, and see if you can wiggle the switch. If so, see if it will turn the lights on. It won't always do it, but if it does, it will confirm that it is sticking. If not, you may have to take the switch out, and jump the two leads to see if the lights will come on. If they do, go ahead and replace the switch. If not, test the two wires with a multimeter, looking for around 12-16 volts DC. If you have power there, then the switch is bad. If you do not, then you need to trace the wires and find the break in the wires.
