I think this is an electronic trans with no modulator. Overdrive is really not a gear but rather torque converter lockup. Torque converter may have completely failed.
i have a 90 chevy 2500 2wd 350ci.when i go to start my truck the key turns hard in the ignition, the check engine light and brake light come on the heater dont work, and the transmission will shift from 1-2 at real high rpm and shift hard,no 3-od.this comes and goes, but all happens at the same time.some times it last for 10 min, sometimes its days.what is going on?
Start with simply changing filter and fluid for transmission. If that doesn,t work go to your local parts place and scan the codes on your vehicle. I have the same problem and that is what I am doing.
This shift Solenoid is damaged. this explains the erratic shifting you are experiencing. replace this solenoid asap if possible. This shift solenoid is responsible for the engagement of the O/D gear as well.
Yes PCM (powertrain control module). is the standard name established by the EPA for all engine control computers, on Ford it also controls the trans shifting.
