GE oven ignitor replaced, gas turns on but no flame

Our GE range is almost 18 years old. She's worked just fine all this time, but recently the oven quit. I can hear the gas come on, but the oven doesn't get hot. Very capable hubby replaced the ignitor, says the amperage gets to about 2.9...the gas valve comes on...wait for a little bit...smell gas but no flame... I'm not anxious to blow my house up. What are we missing>

Yeah, blowing up the house is never a good way to replace an appliance :)

Try contacting GE at: http://www.geappliances.com/service_and_support/contact/form_service.htm. It should be free and they'll be able to help you narrow down what's going on.

Alternately, new GE ranges start at a little over $400 at Home Depot... You certainly have to appreciate keeping a good appliance going, but if it starts nickel & dimeing you, it may be that range's time to go.

The glowbar ignitor has gotten too weak to light the gas.
Replace the ignitor.
Unplug the range.
Turn off the gas ****.
Remove the oven racks.
Remove the bottom oven pan.
Remove the flame spreader grate.
Remove the ignitor and replace it.
Make sure the new ignitor is wired correctly.

Me GE Gas oven is not working, but broiler and range do ?

I am working with model JGBP26WEH1WW GE Gas range: You do not need to remove the back or even turn over, just remove the storage pan at the base of the unit and disconect the two plugs (unique plugs). You will need to splice your old conectors to your new igniter. Yes you have the correct igniter for that model.

My GE Profile spectra JGBP79 oven does not turn on---gas oven

Turn off the gas supply to the range. Remove the oven racks, oven base pan, flame spreader.

Place a clamp on amp meter on one wire of the ignitor and turn the oven on to BAKE. When the ignitor glows it should read more than 3 amps. If it reads 3 amps or less replace the ignitor.
If it does not glow at all, replace the ignitor.

Broiler works, oven settings - no flame, no heat.

Hi, it sounds like the oven ignitor might be bad. Remove the floor panel inside the oven and you will see the ignitor attached to the burner assembly. Turn the oven on and see if it glows. You can test the connection for the ignitor and see if it gets 120V to it. The most common problem with the gas oven is the ignitor. Most of the time, the ignitor glows but is not strong enough to open the gas valve.
Please let me know if this was helpfull or if I can assist you further.

Thanks
Vic

No flame but ignitor still works

the ignitor is bad, It's not pulling enough amps to fully open the valve. Still consider replacement, it's lived it's life

Oven problem.

Only 81/2!! most are only expected to give you 5 good yrs anything else is extras. Your problem may be a defective gas valve (safety valve). Also it may be a defective ignitor - the more likely to go bad (if replacing stuff replace ignitor before safety valve. is there a glowing in the oven? does the flames come on any at all?
