Sound does not work

I recently reformatted my hard drive on a Gateway MX6437 laptop computer. I reformatted it with Windows XP Service Pack 1. I have lost my legit copy of Windows XP with SP2, and since my installation of SP1 is a copied disk, I cannot update the computer because of new verification features Microsoft has placed onto XP over the last year or so. The problem is that although the computer works, as do all its features, the sound does not and has not since the reformat. The sound driver on the gateway website does not work nor will they help with the problem because the computer model is 6 years old, and they won't service it anymore. They referred me to another driver by Realtek audio in place of the one on the gateway site, which also failed. I want to know if anyone knows of another driver to try. Both drivers I have tried downloaded just fine and they failed during installation. Any assistance that solves my problem will be greatly appreciated.

Why am I getting no sound from realtek HD audio on my gateway running windows xp service pack 3

Try the Gateway site, but many XP drivers are being removed from Vendor's sites.
If this machine is running XP, or earlier (98, 2000, ME, etc.), beware. It is no longer supported, and hackers will be looking for these machines to infect. I recommend you back up your data (pictures, documents, etc.) and get a newer machine, or don't try to get on the Internet with this one. If the machine won't boot or let you back it up, and you have important files on it, you could purchase a USB Hard Drive Adaptor, pull out the hard drive, and copy any important files to another machine. That way, at least you may not lose your files. Good luck.

I want to reformat my acer desktop

The CPU holds no information. Reformatting your hard drive is what i think you are asking how to do. You will need a copy of windows... be it XP Vista or Windows 7. Put the disk in, restart your computer and it should say Press any key to boot to CD... press a key and follow the on screen instructions.

When I originally formatted my LaCie Petit hard drive, it was on a laptop computer with windows vista. I often have trouble accessing the information on the hard drive on other computers, specifically,...

Hello,

The reason 7 sees it properly and XP has trouble is because XP is running on an older revision of NTFS and both Vista and 7 use a newer version. Try running windows update on the XP computer, when the Express and Custom buttons come up select custom. If the next screen offers a service pack skip it and continue to the custom list the first time. Once in the custom list you will see the Critical updates list in the center frame, look down the left frame and select Software Updates, then check all of the boxes in the software list in the center frame. Repeat this with the hardware list.
Select review and install, then select install from the install page.

Once the updating process completes, reboot the XP computer if it doesn't force you to. Once up again, rerun the update process and if it offers you a service pack accept it and then take a nap or go for a long walk as it will take quite a bit of time to complete. Again when done reboot, wether you needed the service pack or not repeat the first set of instructions for custom updates until none are left. Some only show up after others are installed.

When this process is complete, try the drive out on the XP computer, the service pack should have resolved the issue but if not you can always copy the data off the drive to any one of your computers then format the external using your XP computer and then copy the data back as the XP format will work fine on Vista and 7 but you will have to deal with a pop up almost every time you plug the drive into the two newer computers asking to scan and repair the drive, ALWAYS SAY NO as this reformats the drive without backing up.

Hope this helps FixYa,

Chris
