Dont know the contrast ratio of this tv

Rear projection cathode ray tube televisions (RPCRTV) have excellent contrast ratio. If you are seeking the actual specifications for that you may have to find a manual for it. RPCRTV's are still the top of the line for contrast ratio, still above all new technologies.

The screen comes up with a large dark square on it ,no cursor, no input is possible, all batteries are new

Hello,

Contrast too high.
Press [CLEAR] key and adjust contrast (Reduce)

Reduce the contast as follows
1.Press [2nd] key and release it
2.Press [DownArrow] and release it
3. Keep repeating the sequence until contrast is adequate.

To increase contrast Do the same but press [UpArrow] instead of [DownArrow]

Numbers are messed up on the screen. can't read what it says.

Hello,

Press the [CLEAR] key to erase everything on the screen. Adjust screen contrast as follows

Reducing the contast
1.Press [2nd] key and release it
2.Press [DownArrow] and release it
3. Keep repeating the sequence until contrast is adequate.

To increase contrast Do the same but press [UpArrow] instead of [DownArrow]

How can I tell if my new LG 42" 5020 lcd tv is 15000:1 ratio or 50000:1 ??

technically it is both it's just people get confused with dynamic contrast and static contrast. The LCD LG5000 Series (00,20,30) has a
[dynamic contrast ratio of 50,000:1]
this would typically be
[15,000:1 contrast ratio] for a plasma.
so to count for, lcd tvs use dynamic contrast and plasmas use static contrast it's just a way to measure them both.
like people weighing themselves soem weigh in kg some in pounds =p hope this helps.

Contrast ratio of tft monitors

Contrast ratio is the ratio between black and white. So low contrast ratio (5000:1) means you can;t see the screen so well in a bright room (where there's a lot of sunlight) A higher contrast ratio (20000:1) means the screen is brighter so easier to see in bright rooms.

Pixel pitch refers to the distance between pixels. The lower the pixel pitch, the sharper the image
