Try holding down the # key and a menu should pop up with the various typing styles. I changed mine to T9 abc and it works fine now

for those people who are like me and cannot read any asian at all must follow these steps after you have successfully placed the new firmware on your phone.
the center button is now the menu button, it is no longer the left top touch button
so go to the menu, then to settings which is the bottom right or the 12th icon on the menu screen
the 4th down in settings is PHONE SETTINGS and the first of those is language lol
english is the second language down, and after you do this you will now be able to navigate through yourself :)
but the first time it won't want to write in english, but this can easily be fixed, the top right touch button just needs to be clicked and moved down to either ABC or T9Abc... ect whichever one you think you will need

I had the same problem with one of my new phones.
I know it may sounds stupid but I took my phone the a chinese restaurant and offered a waiter $5.00 to reset it for me.
He had the phone, which I am sure he never saw before for less than 3 minutes and had it set english.
Other than that, I would go back to place of purchase and have them reset it.
Good luck.
You have to change the software (programming) that runs on your phone (hardware - physical electronics). That is done by loading the software into the memory of the phone. If you load software that includes English text strings - it puts up English text strings on the screen of the phone.
There is, for example, a 'stable' release of Cyanogen Mod 10.1.3 available for that phone (with English text) at... http://download.cyanogenmod.org/?type=stable&device=i9100. That would run an open version of Android "Jelly Bean".
If you have never programmed software into a device before, this may not be the best choice for something to learn on. Resetting that phone to load the software, if done incorrectly, can cause it to 'brick' - become frozen. But if you are patient, thoughtful, strong - you will need a cable and a computer and you can follow the instructions on the Cyanogen Wiki.
