HP LaserJet 1150 and 1300 Series Printers - Understanding and Troubleshooting Control Panel Light Patterns This document explains how to interpret the light patterns on the HP LaserJet 1150 or 1300 series printer control panel. It lists the error conditions, describes the possible causes, and provides steps to resolve the conditions. Description of the control panel The control panel contains two lights and one lighted button. See "Status light patterns " below for an explanation of the light patterns.Light or button Description Ready light Indicates that the printer is ready to print. Go button and light To print a demo page or to continue printing while in manual feed mode, press and release the GO button. Attention light Indicates that a printer media input tray is empty, a print cartridge door is open, a print cartridge is missing, or other errors. Status light patterns This section describes the meaning of the light patterns. If a problem persists, see the flyer that came in the printer box for contact information, or click here to go to "Contacting HP support" below . Ready Light pattern Description The printer is ready to print. Action No action is necessary. To print a demo page, press and release the GO button on the control panel. Processing Light pattern Description The printer is receiving or processing data. Action Wait for the job to print. Continuable error Light pattern Description The printer is in manual feed mode. OR The printer is out of memory. Action The software controls manual feed. If manual feed mode is not wanted, change the setting from the printer properties. See the User Guide for information about changing printer properties. OR Take one of the following actions:

• The page being printed might be too complex for the printer memory capacity. To continue printing, press and release the GO button. The printer might print a partial page, or the quality might be lower than normal.
• Lower the resolution. See the User Guide for information about understanding print quality settings and changing print quality settings.
• Add more memory. See the User Guide for information about installing DIMMs (HP LaserJet 1300 series only).

Attention state Light pattern Description The printer is in an error state that requires operator intervention or help. The door is open, the media is out, the printer cartridge is installed incorrectly, or the media is jammed. Action

1. Check that the printer cartridge door is completely closed.
2. Load media into the correct input tray.
3. Check that the print cartridge is correctly installed in the printer. (See the user guide for information about changing the print cartridge.)
4. Check for any media jams and clear them. (See the user guide for information about clearing jams.
5. Check that the left side panel is completely closed. If the left side panel is completely closed, open the left side panel and push the door sensor. Occassionally, if the left side panel appears closed, the sensor will still remain in the open position, generating this error. Pushing the sensor will shut the door tight, returning the printer to the normal mode.

The product is turned off. Press the power button to turn on the product. Ready and attention lights blink.

The status lights cycle during the formatter initialization period or when the product is processing a cleaning page. No action is required. Wait for the initialization period to end. The product should enter the ready state when the initialization period is finished. Ready light is on.

The product is in the ready state. No action is required. The product is ready to receive a print job. Ready light is blinking.

The product is receiving or processing data. No action is required. The product is receiving or processing a print job. Ready light is blinking slowly.

The product is in low power mode. No action is required. Attention light is blinking.

E0 Paper is jammed in the product. Clear the jam. E1 The input tray is empty. Load the tray. E2 A door is open Verify that the print-cartridge door is fully closed. E4 The product memory is full The job is too complex for the product to print. Simplify the job, or divide it into multiple files. E5 The product did not pick up paper from the tray. You might need to clean or replace the pickup roller. H0 The product is in manual-feed mode. Load the correct paper type and size into the input tray. H1 The product is processing a manual duplex job. Load the pages into the input tray to print the second sides. The attention and toner lights are blinking.

E3 The print cartridge is missing or is not installed correctly. Install the print cartridge. The toner light is on.

The print cartridge has reached the end of its estimated useful life. When the supply has reached this condition, the HP Premium Protection warranty for that supply has ended. You do not need to replace the print cartridge at this time unless print quality is no longer acceptable. Attention light is blinking, and ready light is on.

The product has experienced a continual error from which it will recover on its own. If the recovery is successful, the product continues to the processing data state and completes the job.

If the recovery is unsuccessful, the product continues to the continuable error state. Try removing any media from the media path and turning the product power off, and then on again. The attention and ready lights are on.

E9 The product has experienced a fatal error from which it cannot recover.

1. Turn off the product or disconnect the power cord from the product.
2. Wait 30 seconds, and then turn on the product or reconnect the power cord to the product.
3. Wait for the product to initialize.

If the error persists, contact HP customer support

ATTENTION light(triangle): Indicates that the print-cartridge door is open, print cartridge is missing, and other errors.

If ATTENTION and READY light is blinking:

Printer initialization
The printer is initializing.
No action is necessary.

Cleaning mode
A cleaning page is printing.
Wait until the cleaning page has finished and the printer is in the Ready state.
This could take up to two minutes.

If ATTENTION and READY light is on:

Fatal error
Turn off the printer, and then unplug the printer power cord for 30 minutes.
Plug the printer power cord into the power outlet, and then turn the printer on.
If the error persists, replace the printer.

If ATTENTION light is blinking and READY light is off:

1. Attention: door open, no print cartridge, or media jam
   

The printer is in an error state that requires operator intervention.
Check the following:
? The print cartridge door must be completely closed.
? The print cartridge is correctly installed.
? There is no media jam.

2. Out of memoryThe printer is out of memory.
The page you are printing might be too complex for the printer's memory capacity.
Try lowering the resolution.

Try:

• ERROR LED: E, 1, 9
• ERROR LED: E, 2
• ERROR LED: E, 2, 2
• ERROR LED: E, 2, 3
• ERROR LED: E, 2, 4
• ERROR LED: E, 2, 5
• ERROR LED: E, 2, 6
• ERROR LED: E, 2, 7
• ERROR LED: E, 2, 8
• ERROR LED: E, 2, 9

1 Resolution may vary based on printer driver setting. Color ink droplets can be placed with a horizontal pitch of 1/4800 inch at minimum.
2 PPM print speeds are based on the highest speed printer driver mode. Photo print speeds are based on the default mode driver setting using Canon Photo Paper Plus Glossy paper. Print speeds will vary depending on system configuration, interface, software, document complexity, print mode, types of paper used and page coverage. CPM copy speeds based on fast mode setting using plain paper. Copy speeds may vary based on document complexity, copy mode, page coverage and number of copies.
3 USB 2.0 Hi-Speed requires Windows XP, 2000 or Mac OS X operating systems. For Windows 98, Me and Mac OS X v.10.2 to 10.2.6 operating systems, the printer will operate at USB 1.1 specifications.

This of course depends on why the light is on! If you had a fax come in and it is in memory, you will need to print the fax and clear the memory before the light will go out. The LCD Display should be telling you why that light is on.

1. There is a fax or print job in memory waiting to be printed.--> See steps below
2. There is a paper jam --> Open printer - Remove all paper - Close printer - press OK button
3. You are out of ink or the cartridges are low. - Change Cartridges

Report or List Description ACTIVITY REPORT Shows recent facsimile transactions performed by your machine. You can enable or disable automatic printing of this report after every 20 transactions. You can also manually set the machine to print it. CODED SPEED DIAL
LIST Lists the destination numbers and names registered for coded dial speed dialing. USER'S DATA LIST Lists the current settings of your machine and the registered sender information. MEMORY LIST Lists the documents currently stored in the machine's memory. TX (Transmission)
REPORT Prints after transmission of a document.
You can enable or disable this feature, or set the machine to print a report only when an error occurs.
You can also set the machine to print the first page of the document under the transmission report to remind you of the contents of the document. RX (Reception)
